1) Finale is a music notation software. You can compose pieces by clicking and dragging the notes to where you want them on the staves, and it also plays back what you have composed in a MIDI format.

2) I'm not for sure, but I've heard something to that effect.

3) No. Finale (the main program) is around 700 dollars last I heard. You can download Finale Notepad for free.

For more info, check out www.finale.com (I think that's it, anyway).

I do a lot of music writing and arranging. I used Finale for awhile and then switched to Sibelius. Both do a good job of letting you arrange or write music, play it back, convert it to midi (or even MP3).

I certainly like Sibelius better, but my comparison is from about 5 years ago. I have been with Sibelius and upgraded several times. From what I hear, Finale has improved a lot and is quite comparable.

I don't know about Finale, but Sibelius will let you download a demo version and try it for free ( http://www.sibelius.com/products/sibelius/ ).

Both will play the music and do transpositions with ease. If you would like to see and hear some Sibelius music, I have several selected pieces linked on my website:

Brass Quintet Music: http://www.ibowtie.com/storesibeliusbrassq.html
Trumpet Music: http://www.ibowtie.com/storesibeliustrmpt.html
Wind Band Music: http://www.ibowtie.com/storesibeliuswband.html

Finale and Sibelius are not free. Free ones exist but are usually awful.

Finale 2004 is free if you know how to get it. Most file-sharing programs have users with a version of Finale that doesn't require a serial number. Not that I'd encourage that or anything...

The FBI could go on these programs and nab people for crimes much worse than pirating software.
For the record, my copy was abtained legally.
