You could always just practice fingering...

Re: Frustrated.

The pencil Brem, the pencil AND you can finger your horn when it is in your lap. Just make sure to BANG THOSE VALVES DOWN and play the music in your head!!! (gets rid of frustration too!)

Re: Frustrated.

Why should you bang the valves down? I keep seeing this. Isn't economy of motion a good thing? Or am I missing something? </newbie>

Re: Frustrated.

Misty,
about 1/2 of the movement of the valve produces a sub optimal sound due to the way the ports are made.
When we move the valve quickly, we change faster from one good sounding note to the next.
The only way to move the valve quickly is to bang it down.

Re: Frustrated.

Aha, I see. I didn't have that problem with the rotary valves on the French horn. Is that why people seem to like rotary trumpets so much?

YES! only 1/3rd of the movement of a rotary is fuzzy in sound AND the keys do not have to mave as far so they are automatically faster. Banging them down can make slurs almost sound tongued!

Re: Frustrated.

Banging the valves can also reinforce the timing and rhythm...always a good thing!
