Question A Good Course of Study that Would Help Veterans?

Hi there everyone! I am a first year university student currently majoring in music. I like it, but I want to find something where I could help veterans. I am currently a professional bugler and a performer with the American Legion concert band in my area. What would be a good course of study that exclusively helps vets or the military? I like being a music major, but it just doesn't feel like my professors understand the importance of what I do. When I have to perform funeral detail, they sometimes don't excuse the absence. As a matter of fact, the last day I was at school, one of my professors said that if I miss another class, then I'll get a bad grade. Should I just drop that class? Forget about school and perform funeral detail and help vets all my life? What would you do in this situation? Thanks much! Any advice is welcome!

Show them the Bugles Across America web site? I just discovered that, it's very cool.

Thanks so much! Yeah, join my corps! We're always looking for volunteer buglers! You can use your trumpet too, or the corps director Tom Day will issue you a bugle upon request. Hope to see you at future corps events! No dues either! What drew me to BAA was the fact that, even though I am totally blind, I can still serve my country through this organization.

You are doing a great service. I think if you talk to your professors and are willing to work hard to make up the time you are losing by your bugling, they will be more than happy to accommodate you. Compromise is a great thing. :)

As a veteran, I say thank you for your service. But also: at this point in your life, your education is paramount. During WWII, when the country needed soldiers, college students were told to stay in and graduate (and then join up, of course).

You'll be able to do a lot more for veterans, and everybody else, if you complete your education. To accomplish anything worthwhile takes some sacrifice, and missing the occasional event may be one you have to make. Is there no way you could help to find another bugler to replace you every once in a while?

Nope, there hasn't been a bugler for the West Fargo VFW for years until I came. There is no interest. There is just the crappy digital.

Ok, if you can't find a substitute - perhaps the people who organize your appearances could offer the family a live bugler except for certain times (your can't-miss class hours) when they can provide the recording. The time of a funeral can be adjusted in many cases. Let the family decide how important it is to them. Or - there must be a high-school around - maybe the guys at the Post could take up a collection to pay one of the trumpeters to fill in for you? Or maybe they just need to be asked?
