| Holloween Red Neck Style As some of you may know I'm a displaced northerner; they have a term for us damn yankees! The difference for those of you who don't know is that a yankee comes down and goes back up. A damn yankee comes down and stays... Kind of like a hemmoroid or so I'm told.... Anyway, I'm from the metro Detroit area orignially and my wife and I moved down here to west central Georgia about 1 year and 5 months ago. I had lost my job in Michigan and could not find another one; a situation all too common and getting worse. When we moved down here we moved to Hamilton, GA which is way out in the woods. Only deer and raccoons could find our door so holloween last year was lame to say the least. Not so this year. I recently moved closer to my employer due to the $400.00 a month gasoline expenses that I could no longer afford. I miss my very peaceful, tranquil place in the foot hills of the Applacian mountains near Pine Mountain, Georgia but the move was necessay. I now reside in Columbus, Georgia or in town as it were. Back on thread; so tonight I'm sitting on the front porch handing out candy to the trick or treat'ers and am surprised with how trick or treating is handled down here. First off I was deeply disappointed as I'd say 40% of the kids did't even bother with costumes they just showed up; uttered something that sounded like Ugh.. and opened a pillow sack or big bag with which to receive a treat no where near deserved. I gently suggested that next year they may want to at least put a sheet over their head or something! Most of the trick or treaters are brought around street by street by an adult with a car. They come down the street and look for homes with house lights on. When one is spotted it's a Chinese fire drill from hell. They come barrelling for the door full speed in search of candy. Hell back where I'm from I'd hide in the yard in a Michael Meyers mask, or Jason and chase em' down for fun. If I did that here I'd be shot! It's crazy... Then the whole reason I wrote this appeard before me. A pick up truck from about 1954 came sputtering up with so many kids in the bed of it that the truck's bed was riding on the axle. They charged up to the porch where I was seated smoking a cigar and casually sipping a Molsen Ice. I can't get that down here by the way (Molsen Ice) they don't know what Canadian beer is in Georgia so I bring it back with me when I visit my beloved Detroit. Anyway; the oldest is the first to arrive mentally I'm counting kids and I see something like 14 kids varying in ages from 14 down to about 3 crawing out of this pick up. I look at the 14 year old and say, "Wow, you guys really know how to trick or treat eh?" He proudly smiles and says to me, "Mr. I can see your not from around here. Mind you I'm wearing a Tee shirt that says, "Detroit Lions Football" Don't ask me why! Anyway he says This is Red neck Trick or Treating. I aint got time to explain it just fill me up and I'll be on my way." How about that! These kids looked like they just crawled out of a field somewhere and all they did was put some lame color on their hair and face but hey works for me. They cleaned me out; I got to learn a little about Red Neck trick or treating and now I'm sharing it with all of you. So if you and 13 other people all pile into the bed of a 1954 Chevy Pick-up (Short Bed) to do your trick or treating; You might be a red neck! I wonder if Jeff will ever use it? Hummmmmmm |

| Pianissimo User | You can probably get the Molson Ice at a larger beverage store in Atlanta. We've heard tell of that fancy stuff up here. |

| 'Up' is relative. Atlanta is farther north---get it? John, rednecks do trick or treat from pickup trucks---but those clowns that showed up don't really qualify! I grew up a redneck, partying with rednecks in the San Juoaquin Valley of California. I also lived for eight years just about an hour north of Cincinnati. Real rednecks know how to have fun on Halloween night. Haunted orange groves, or haunted barns---either way you're likely to have some guy running around with a live, running chain saw (don't worry, there's no chain on it). Heck, one year some buds and I put on a little exhibition where we were sawing limbs off with blood bags concealed under the clothes---while the guy was alive and screaming! We had somewhere around a dozen folks hit the dirt on that one! Then there was the night we hung a dummy from the town water tower. And in high school, we'd be trick or treating from the backs of pickup trucks, which were also loaded down with water ballons. There was a running water ballon fight among kids in three counties from the backs of pickup trucks. And, before all the Halloween fun began (or sometimes after) there'd be a bonfire and weanie roast down in a dry wash in the middle of nowhere. Nah, yankees don't have anything on real redenecks when it comes to a little fun..... |

Man, I feel like I should have my hockey viewing rights taken away; Uh on second that scratch that....! Hockey is hard enough to find down here; although we do have a fairly good semi-pro team in town: The Columbus Cottonmouths after the snake!

Fair enough; sounds like you hung out in a fun crowd.. It was just funny to me because I swear that everyone who came out of the bed of that truck looked like Ope from Andy Griffith! It was unique!

| Mezzo Piano User | When I was stationed at Ft. Benning my wife and I used to go to the Cottonmouth games. The best thing about semi-pro hockey is the fights! I loved watching those guys and sure do miss them from time to time. BTW, welcome to the South! |
