| Fortissimo User | How to move a Hi-Hoe If you ever find the need to move a Hi-Hoe, first get yourself a low-boy trailer. Drive the Hi-Hoe onto the trailer. Lash it down SOLIDLY with lots of chains. Get into the cab of the tractor, fasten your seatbelt and start driving. As you approach the freeway, accelerate gently to merge into the right-hand lane. It will be the safest. CAUTION! You do need to be aware of overpasses and such.... or else you are liable to run into some difficulty. Specifically you may actually almost cut the overpass in half! I-70, Kansas: Note the gentle delicacy with which it sliced the overpass while bending the bucket arm backwards! ![]() Pay particular attention to how well the thing was lashed to the low-boy! It even disconnected the trailer from the tractor! ![]() So there you are, tooling along in your car and suddenly....there is this big, yellow "thing" tearing along the dotted line! ![]() I wonder what he told his insurance company? |

![]() | Yeah, there has to be more to this story. Somebody was very careful in chaining this equpment down. I can't see somebody that careful forgetting to put the bucket arm down. Even if you did forget, you'd know pretty quick as you could see it in the mirrors and it would bob around catching the wind. It does make me wonder what the rest of the story might be....

| Fortissimo User | I think he just left the arm "up" a little too far... probably to make sure it cleared the cab of the tractor (or maybe a "headache rack"). Well, he's got a headache now for sure! Most of the guys around here hauling these things put the unit on the rig backwards with the arm towards the rear. Makes sense to me. Then there was this crane company that I'd hired to come out to the factory and do some work one day. Their lot is in an industrial park and they have to come out around a car dealership to get to the highway. Well, it seems that the dealership decided to park a half-dozen new Dodge Ram diesel pickups on the grassy verge next to the highway. The lad driving the crane (one of those articulated, 10-wheel jobs made by Krupp of Germany) misjudged the corner and the "boom hook/weight" wiped out four of the brand-new trucks! (I think they fixed 'em up and the crane company decided to use them for company vehicles instead of going after the insurance!) The dealership keeps their trucks ON their lot now. |

| Fortissimo User | I think that originally it probably wasn't all that high. It only had to be 6" to a foot too high and then hitting the bridge cranked it "up and over". Those booms aren't designed to go even vertical, let alone "over top dead center!". I think they probably found that machine a total write-off... the frame would have been bent, all the mounting locations for the hydraulics etc. displaced. They might have saved the motor and maybe the hydraulic drive unit but that's about it. Sure bent that trailer down too! Wonder how far down the road he got with the tractor before he discovered something was wrong!? |
