If they'd get him a shepherd's crook cornet he could use his right hand for stopping/muting - it sounds something like a French horn that way. (I haven't personally had any luck in using the hand to change between partials. Maybe I was playing too low when I last tried it?)

Playing left-handed also makes it easier to turn the pages.

Cool,
he doesn't use the pinky ring so he obviously plays with no pressure, he has his finger on the third valve to increase its mass and get better slotting. The bell is pointed towards heaven - a trick often used by Rafael Mendez.

I think he is going to make it, if he doesn't drown in his own spit first!!!!

Forget it--the kid is obviously playing the wrong mouthpiece!

Re: I thought I would irritate you guys with this photo.

I could definately see myself doing it that way, since I'm naturally left-handed. You should have seen how I held a rifle at that age, it was amazing I could hit anything lol but I was a dead shot.

I play trumpet normally, shoot rifle now normally, shoot pistol left handed, send Morse code right handed, write with my left..... just what works. But I'd not pick on the kid in the photo, it just shows his left hand is dominent.

BTW I throw with my right weird huh?

You know, it might be worthwhile playing left-handed every once in a while, just to keep your hand in (so to speak) - one of the suggestions I've seen here for learning tricky fingering patterns is to do it with the left hand. Under great stress (as measured by heart rate) it becomes almost impossible to operate one hand individually, so at some level of the operating system they must be treated as a unit.

Jude I'm afraid I might like it so much left-handed that I might "stick" that way lol.

Re: I thought I would irritate you guys with this photo.

I was born left handed but forced to write with my right hand.
I still eat with my knife and fork in the wrong hands.
I play trumpet right handed, but oddly, if I have a difficult passage to play, sometimes I find it easier to do left handed. It must be the way my brain is wired up.
I can't us that trick if I am playing a rotary trumpet though.
