Instruments that play like a trumpet.

Is there a instrument (besides a flugel) that plays like a trumpet?
I've been wanting to branch out to a second instrument, but I dont want to learn a whole new playing style (a drastic one like changing to a woodwind).

So far I was thinking of Mellophone or baritone.

Anybody have any playing history with these instruments or have any other instruments that play like a trumpet?

Seriously though, it's a one-of-a kind horn made by Monette.

You could play cornet. Physically played the same, but with a different concept of sound. Cornet solo lit is really fun on a good cornet.

Re: Instruments that play like a trumpet.

It depends on what you mean. A rennaissance Zink is kind of like a recorder with a trumpet mouthpiece. It has an extraordinarily beautiful sound, but takes a while to learn. There is also the natural trumpet with no valves. Saxhorns come to mind as do keyed trumpets. They were "common" around the civil war and there are bands that still use them today. Dale Proctor is a TMer that is active in that scene.

I have found Tuba playing beneficial to my sense of pitch and rhythm. It also teaches the average trumpet player bass cleff - which can be useful when learning how to transpose.

Re: Instruments that play like a trumpet.

Eb Tenor Horn uses the same fingerings and plays in treble clef - you can use all your trumpet scores too. I use mine to warm down after a long practice when building up to a gig.

The zink looks like a cool instrument to learn, but where can I find one?

And the only problem with the tuba is the cost, I just can afford $2,000 on something I'm only gonna play once in a while

Re: Instruments that play like a trumpet.

I have a Monk cornetto with an acorn mouthpiece. It is pretty cool, but it is hard on my right hand (a bit of a stretch for the last two holes). I'm sure you can cornetti, but Christopher Monk passed away. I haven't searched the net to see if there is still a company making those particular horns.
