Jazz Piano

My mom loves to play the piano, especially jazz type music, but we have a limited selection. Does anyone know of an advanced book that requires no improv and has lots of good tunes, probably standards, that I could get for her for Christmas/Chanukah?? Thanks...

Jared

Jared,
Try "The Best Jazz Standards Ever" for Piano/Vocal/Guitar.
Its like a fake book but the piano parts are all written out.
Its perfect for getting the basics down, and then use as a basis for embellishment for melody or chord voicings.

In terms of advanced or not... let's put it this way, Count Basie sounded pretty advanced by placing a plink here and there... its all in the touch and interpretation, but this book is a start since it has piano staves.

It's published by Hal Leonard ISBN 0-7935-2958-1
Hal Leonard number HL00311641.

I picked up the book at the back of a Sam Goody store for $17.

And while you're getting the book, go out and find a CD or two by Michael Kaeshammer. http://www.pacificmusic.net/html/kaeshammer/

Yeah, he's Canadian too...out of the same school as Diane Krall. But brother, can that guy play!

Oh...grab some Oscar Peterson while you're there....you really can't go wrong.
