I don't mean to diminish the sadness of this whole story but, if the little girl had been something other than a pretty, blond, beauty pagent contestant the press might have given it only a small by-line in the paper and it never would have made national news.

Alex Yates has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I actually met Pat Ramsey as she and her husband lived in the same area as I before they moved away from GA. I also played regularly at their church. This story always twisted my gut and to this day, I don't know what to believe.

Sieg - I think it is the fact that she was "abducted/murdered" on Christmas Eve and the way she was killed that makes this a story. Yes, she was a beautiful little girl, but most folks I know scoff at the involvement in pageants, etc. As you touched on, she was more than that. She was a beautiful little soul from what I have learned. If her parents are innocent, this is quite a blow for the husband, losing a wife and daughter.....if they are not, what a nightmare of emotional baggage he must carry with him for the rest of his life.

I'll tell you this: if that murder had happened in New York City it would have been solved in a week. The only "mystery" about it is how the local police could have been so stupid!

TV- I completely understand that this is a terribile story for those involved and for those who know the people personally. What I'm taking a shot at is the national press who spend a lot of time sensationalizing stories like these. The not-so pretty, non-white, poor and disadvantaged girls that were abducted/murdered in that same time frame got no national press to speak of and certainly not the ongoing media attention. The Ramsey's were used to sell papers and TV ads. The fact that it worked is another tragedy.

Actually Sieg, I see this a bit further than your stopping point. The media circus was a tragedy, but it did make the news more receptive to covering tragedies involving children of all economic classes and ethnic backgrounds. The fact that this was reported so heavily because it dealt with a wealthy Anglo family and their child opened a lot of eyes. The unfortunate case of Natalie Holloway really brought racism to the forefront in reporting crimes and abductions. I feel the news outlets are trying to even the playing field as all of our children are newsworthy. I hope the trend continues.

Another trend with cases that generate a lot of media attention is the polictical pressure that is put on law enforcement to clear the case.

This happens everywhere. Investigators are forced to submit cases before they are ready, rushed in to getting people charged because someone higher than them doesn't have the backbone to tell the media, family or whoever that the case is not completed.

In an ideal world, all cases would be shown equal effort, but sadly in our political culture this cannot always be the case.

TV-Good points. If that's the case then it's fine with me. Unfortunately, we've seen all too many times that the national news media will chase the latest popular story and forget about stories that lose momentum or become "old news" regardless of how important they may be.
