![]() ![]() ![]() | Knitting a Singlet for Cecil ..... I was asked a question at my uncle's 90th birthday celebration recently - I don't know 'why me' but be that as it may, I was totally unable to answer. The question was about the lyrics of a song of Gracie Fields' - I'm sure not exclusively hers but certainly one she was partial to, it seems. I understand that many of you will be saying - "who is Gracie Fields?" - well she passed away in 1979, so that puts the complexion on it, and leaves just you old blokes, or very strange younger ones. Oh! The question? OK, what are the lyrics for the song that encapsulates the thought "...... I'm knitting a singlet for Cecil ......." any ideas? Google didn't have much to offer, perhaps some of you TMers from Rochdale in the UK may be able to talk to the senior members of your familiy, please.

I'm knitting a singlet for Cecil, A nice, wooly singlet for Cecil. It will keep him as snug As a bug in a rug Da da da-da da da-da dada! I found a bunch of Gracie Fields CDs on iTunes. That tune was not there, but maybe it had another title?

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Knitting a Singlet for Cecil ..... Thanks Robin - I got there too - it's just a niggling little frustration at the moment. I just wondered if anyone of the TMers was sufficiently "educated" to get a little more than the Ta da da bit.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Knitting a Singlet for Cecil ..... OK, thanks maryh, so now I have this much: I'm knitting a singlet for Cecil, A nice, wooly singlet for Cecil. It will keep him as snug As a bug in a rug And in it he surely will nestle. I have a couple of posts that suggest Gracie Fields was not the original artist for this piece, and I'm wondering if these are the only lyrics, the chorus, or only one verse - I will continue searching. I'm not yet sure how this relates to trumpets - but somehow I will find a link.

![]() | Re: Knitting a Singlet for Cecil ..... I think it was written by Sarah McLeish in 1938. Gracie Fields did record it, but also someone called Alan Breeze who worked with Billy Cotton. The first line is I'm courtin a lad - but I don't know the rest. Alan Breeze's daughter tours around the U.K performing her father's hits including this song, but I've yet to see this. I've been trying to find a recording for at least 10 years - the BBC in the UK have to borrow one when they play it as it has long since been deleted. I regularly look on ebay and youtube just in case, but so far with no luck! |

I'm knitting a singlet for cecil A nice woolly singlet for cecil It will keep him as snug As a bug in a rug As in it's embrace he will nestle I haven't got too much wool And he'll need to keep giving a pull The front isn't straight At the back there's a V And the armholes are not Where I meant them to be But it's warm so it's sure To remind him of me This singlet I'm knitting for Cecil. I'd pretty much given up on this one - I'll pass it along before the Old Timer's Disease really kicks in - he'll be so tickled. Cheers,
