Looking for Summer Band Camp Gig

Hi, Folks!

I am posting this announcement here on this forum to let folks know that I am actively searching for opportunities at summer band and jazz band camps for 2009. I’d be interested in either faculty positions and or artist in residence positions.

I am moving the search to the forums as I want to hold off on soliciting the camp directors directly out of respect to my trumpeting peers who already hold these positions. I am NOT trying to get another person’s gig! However, if, for some reason, a regular faculty member CAN’T do the camp this coming summer (2009) I need folks to know that I am very serious about doing this. Location is no object, depending on the salary.

So, if you normally do a band camp but you can’t do it this year for some reason, please consider me as a sub. I will stand you in good stead as a sub and I’ll not crowd your regular gig in any way. I will be there to support your work.

I am under some mild pressure from home and school regarding summer school. Deadlines for summer school rotation are coming up in about a month and I need to know what the possibilities are before I commit to summer school. My PREFERENCE is to do band camps!

I might have to contact the band staffing personnel directly before too long, but if there is any way I can do this via the more traditional word of mouth, I’d feel better about it. I’ll gladly submit eelectronic copies of a cover letter and resume if needed.

Thanks in advance for helping me get the word out. Rather than post here, just email me at nick@nickdrozdoff.com.

Peace!

How about the University of Missouri, St. Louis? Jim Widner runs it. Lorenzo Trujillo is the faculty trumpet teacher, Mike Vax shows up and you might as well get it on it. It is broken down into combo, solo, big band and some others. Call up Jim Widner and see if you can get a position.

Here is Lorenzo's web page. He played the Tchikovski cello concerto arr by Sergi N. in December and played a great performance. Trumpeter Lorenzo Trujillo

Re: Looking for Summer Band Camp Gig

Stchasking,

Do you think it might be more prudent for me to contact Lorenzo first? When I say I am not seeking to hustle another man's gig, I mean it. There's room for everyone somewhere. I don't want Lorenzo to think I'm gunning for him or something like that. That's not my style.

Thoughts? I figured I'd email Widner if it seems wise to contact him first.

St. Louis would be cool! I grew up down there!

Re: Looking for Summer Band Camp Gig

Start with Jim Widner. I am pretty sure he runs the summer jazz camps. You never know. Lorenzo could be on the road playing a gig in the summer. I doubt if Lorenzo is going to hang around St. Louis unless he plays for the Muni opera or teaches summer school.

Give it a try and let me know what happens.

Re: Looking for Summer Band Camp Gig

Nick,
Here is Jim Widner's website. It includes information about his jazz camps. It looks like it is independent of the University. Jim Widner Jazz Camps
I say give it a shot. Some of his camps are in the Midwest. The story is on his web page. Good Luck. Let us know if you get the gig.

Ed,
Lorenzo is a great asset to UM St. Louis. I will be watching for his performances. He was at ITG Banff as a performer with the Chase tribute. I stayed for both sessions. Students looking for a place to study trumpet should seriously consider UM St. Louis.
