| Re: Louis Armstrong's World War I Draft Card There was a thing going on.... where able-bodied men of a certain age range, not serving Over There, could be drafted to work statside. I think it may have been intended to "draft" blacks and slackers alike. Armstrong spent the time at the docks, loading and stuff, working with a mule. I read about it in a book called Louis Armstrong in New Orleans or something like that. I don't think he got paid much, either. It must have been an exhausting time, because I bet he still tried to get in all the trumpet time he could. |

![]() | Re: Louis Armstrong's World War I Draft Card I don't think it is a draft card. It is his draft registration form. He is 18 when he filled it out. Is it necessary to use the word "slackers". |

| Re: Louis Armstrong's World War I Draft Card In WWI war fever was high, and they considered anyone able-bodied (and white, therefore enlistable) who didn't sign up to be a slacker. Of course it was a stupid war, and being a slacker was a pretty smart thing. I just used that word rather than use 6 or 7 words to say the same thing. I swear PC'ness will be the death of us all. |
