| Forte User | MiniDisc Tech help So... I recently pulled out the minidisc and found a bunch of songs I'd like to transfer from the discs to my itunes library on the computer... Anyone know how to do this? Seems like I have an older MD cause I can go from computer to Disc but not vice versa. What info you need for help? Thanks folks. That Tim guy again.

| Forte User | Re: MiniDisc Tech help Get a male-male 8th inch headphone cable and go from your minidiscs aux out or headphone out to your computers mic in port. That is the easiest way to do it. Record the sound in Audacity.

Good idea for Bear's project. I assume he has Audacity program. If not, he can go to the link: Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder Audacity: Download Download Audacity Free | Freewarecentral.net | Freewarecentral.net Best wishes both of you. Lloyd | |

| Forte User | Re: MiniDisc Tech help Yee-Haw!!! Much Appreciated! I don't know if y'all heard of them, but I have a MD I found of a Christian based a capella group called (ironicaly enough) ACAPELLA. Every song they've done since foundation is on that minidisc, not counting the past 3 years or so. 300+ songs (yes, some are repeats but in a different arrangement). If interested in a CD (just so I can say I shared the Word) just PM and I'll see what I can do... scratch that. That would probably break every law out there.... Brekelefew, let me clarify my question: Will Audacity automatically seperate the tracks (even if MD is on constant play) or will I need to go back after recording all and seperate them myself? I would just plug it in and find out for myself but I need to wait till a payday to get an 8th inch M-M cable. The cable that came with the MD is a USB-USB(b) plug [kinda like a small firewire]. Which when I plugged in can only seem to do PC---> MD and not vice versa. I even took the initiative and looked in the owners manual, lol. But nothng about MD-->PC... Thanks for y'alls help.

| Forte User | Re: MiniDisc Tech help Most MD players don't allow MD-PC transfer to prevent the massive amount of bootlegging MD users do (myself included when I had one.) Audacity won't autoseparate tracks, but separating them is pretty easily done by looking at the waveform shape and cutting each section and pasting it in a new file. The whole program is well laid out. It shouldn't take you long to figure out how to cut and paste parts of the waveform and then export them to .wav or whatever fileform you want. If you want to make them mp3's then you have to get the LAME encoder, which again is easily found with google. If you need anymore help just PM me or post it in this thread.

| Forte User | Re: MiniDisc Tech help Whew... ok, this may take a few days then. Another question then: How long is the hold pattern in the recording?.. How much time is alloted to Audacity recoding?... Meaning, do I need to be physically present and seperate track by track so time doesn't run out in the middle of a song or can I just transfer it all over the course of the night and come back tomorrow and seperate, etc? Thanks for the help!

| Forte User | Re: MiniDisc Tech help It will record until your hard drive is full. I suggest being in the area of your computer when you do it. Maybe when you get home for work start a track playing and in 74 minutes (or however long your disc is) come back and stop the recording and save your file for editing later. I wouldn't recommend leaving it on overnight because if you fill your harddrive up completely it can cause your whole system to lock up....sometimes beyond normal repairs. The files you make can be compressed into many formats to save space after you have recorded them into Audacity. I wouldn't call it transfering. It is the same as if you were to make a mix tape on a cassette. You let the song play and it gets copied to the other media. Real Time.
