Re: Must be getting old....

I play 2nd chair in every group I regularly play with. I occasionally sub in other groups and play any part from 1st to 4th. I have played 1st - in a concert band, a dance band, and for a little while in brass band. I think I'm probably more suited to 2nd part, though, but it's nice to get a solo "bone" thrown my way occasionally...

I don't really know if I'd want to play in a group that would have me on 1st...

Re: Must be getting old....

The 2nd chair high school players do come here.....and give advice to everyone else....usually about how great Bach Strads and Bach 1C or 3C mouthpieces are.

Also they come and complain about their section leaders and also ask about what is the best horn for marching band.

When we moderators find out the poster is a school age player not sittying first chair....we BAN them.

I'm way past high school, but I play a Bach Strad with a Bach 1-1/2C mouthpiece...

RIGHT!!!

But you don't come here and announce to us all that they are the end all of equipment!

Plus, you're too old to ban!

Good equipment is nice to have, and is certainly better than poor equipment, but it won't make you a good player. It just makes being a good player a little easier.

Nothing wrong with a good Bach, either, but there are numerous horns and mouthpieces out there that are top-notch. Thus saith the perpetual 2nd player.
