robertwhite has a spectacular aura about
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
Orchestra of St. Luke's
The EOS Orchestra (is this still around?)
The American Symphony Orchestra

Probably a gazillion more. This is all I could think of.

Er.........The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is the group you're thinking of. You know, the Twin Cities and all that jazz.

In NYC, the Brooklyn Philharmonic is still going. The Queens Symphony has a season, but I just learned that the EOS Orchestra is no more.
The New York Pops, with Skitch Henderson conducting is going strong.
Both the NY State Opera and Ballet have full orchestras.

There is still a good amount of free-lance work in NYC.

Remember the scene in "The Producers" that Zero Mostel danced on the lighted fountain? That took place in the very center of Lincoln Center. The New York State Theater is there, it is the home of The NY State Opera and Ballet, two different orchestras, by the way. The Metropolitan Opera is there,as is the New York Philharmonic's Avery Fisher Hall. Alice Tully Hall and Juilliard are across 65th street.

Beverly Sills managed the NY State Opera for a while.

Skitch is very much alive. The NY Pops is a very busy group. The wonderful Neil Balm is their principal trumpet player.
