OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? If you tell people you play trumpet, or you play sax, what's the reaction? If people react to you playing trumpet, and your buddy playing sax, which do they seem to bond with more? Who was cooler in high school, the trumpet kids or the sax kids? You get the idea..... post your thoughts here!

Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? My middle-school-age nephew tells me saxes are the coolest of the horns. Electric guitars are cooler, though. I get more respect for even acoustic guitar - which is still pretty cool - than for trumpet. Which is, kinda, you know, old.

| Fortissimo User | Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? Trumpet is the coolest, however, it is uneducated peoples who seem to not grasp the understanding of how amazing it is. Sax does come off as the more popular instrument though, I mean if you see a small jazz combo with 1 horn and rhythm section, chances are that the horn being played is a sax. I think a lot of this tends to be with how it sounds, a lot more people seem to be soothed by smooth jazz from a sax rather than trumpet |

Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? - Now that's a bad ride. :) Anybody ever seen if somebody's built a four valved trumpet-trombone hybrid? What i mean is a greater total length of tubing, and larger bell. -The scale of a Bb trumpet increased by say, ten, twenty percent. .

Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? I think there's anti-trumpet propaganda out there being directed at little kids. When I showed a trumpet to a 4-year-old, he immediately clapped his hands over his ears and screwed his eyes shut. (No, I didn't have time to play a note.) I'm pretty sure he'd never seen one before, in real life, as it were. (And there are no string players on either side of his family.) Here's what you need - the American-invented, American-manufactured Xaphoon, a pocket saxophone/clarinet: Maui Xaphoon Pocket Sax/BRAND NEW - eBay (item 230220023037 end time Feb-11-08 18:16:45 PST) Perfect for the street performer - light, rugged, pleasant-toned (not sure about "touchy"). Cheap. Comes in a variety of colors. Key of C (no transposing from vocal music). Two octaves instantly. Practical - start learning tunes immediately rather than working to develop muscle. Can be played for longer stretches than the physically exhausting trumpet. Does not frighten small children. Awakens warm, protective feelings in pretty clarinet players (probably).

Re: OK now which is really cooler, trumpet or sax? - Trumpet's cooler.. no question. Its loudness was what drew me to it, when i was a kid. As it is, sax-fuzz hasn't ever sounded right to my ear. ___ Thanks for that nplotts1. C
