One of the biggest decisions of my life

Hello all!

It's been a few weeks since I posted here. I've been really busy, let me tell you! Lots of things are happening right now: the end of semester, the end of my first year of college, joining Sigma Alpha Iota, being in jazz band, being in band, etc.

This year has been insane. Life in general has been insane! I've learned so much and grown so much...so have all the people around me. I just can't believe it.

Anyway, this all ties into what I'm about to do this week. I've been meeting with a recruiter from the National Guard, and most recently, one from the Navy. After looking at the pros and cons of each organization, I've finally come to a decision. I am joining the Navy Reserves.

Tomorrow I'm leaving Iowa City for Des Moines to start my journey. I have to take the ASVAB tomorrow night, and Wednesday I have a physical to get through. After that, I will get to choose what I want to be trained in, will sign a contract, and shortly after I will raise my right hand and swear in.

Like my Dad said, I've done a lot of growing this past year. It's time for me to take that growth to a whole new level and become the best I can be! I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. I'm going to be going to Boot Camp this summer!

Since I regard TM (and TH) as part of my family, I thought I would let ya'll know.

I'm gonna be a sailor!
Lara

Lara-
I salute you. This is a big time in your life, and an equally important decision.

Wear that sailor hat with pride.

Re: One of the biggest decisions of my life

Lara,

WOW! Best of luck in this new chapter in your life. I’m sure you will excel and discover where your true gifts manifest themselves. You have a true gift for communication, and I’m sure they will find a way to make you even better at what is already a strong point for you.

Try not to ding up “Silverstar” as you’re crawling through the muck on your stomach during basic training!

Take care,

Re: One of the biggest decisions of my life

When I first saw your avatar on TH you were a 14 year old girl with freckles and red hair. Now, you're a grown woman ready to leave college to serve your country in our military.

I'm proud to know you and commend you for doing what I was not able. You will always have my gratitude for your decision to serve and defend our country and the values that it stands for.

I'm proud of you and wish you the best.

Good luck. Since it is the reserves I expect you to stay in college.

Thanks, St. C.... I didn't make that connection about reserves and active duty military. Well, either way it'll be quite the experience, no?

Re: One of the biggest decisions of my life

I've been considering joining some branch of the military band myself.

But that's a completely different story.

Anyways, I have a couple relatives in the military, and they don't seem to mind it too much. Good luck.
