While these instruments rarely come to auction, there is a good market for them privately.

A friend of mine bought one three years or so ago.

At one time he had three Strad's in his home at one time, comparing the sounds before he chose the one he purchased, for 2.5 million.

Different sales reps were willing to bring at least two more to his home also.
