| Phil Smith masterclass at the Coast Guard Academy June 3rd The United States Coast Guard Band welcomes Philip Smith, principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic, for a master class on Saturday, June 3 at 1:30 p.m., and an afternoon concert on Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. in Leamy Hall Auditorium at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. In the Saturday master class, Coast Guard Band musicians and area college music majors perform for Mr. Smith in a forum-like setting. In Sunday’s concert, talented local high school musicians, chosen by their band directors, sit beside members of the band and perform a variety of works including Gordon Jacob’s “William Byrd Suite” and “Someone to Watch Over Me” by George and Ira Gershwin featuring Mr. Smith as soloist. Philip Smith joined the New York Philharmonic as Co-Principal Trumpet in October 1978, and assumed the position of Solo Principal Trumpet in June 1988. Mr. Smith has appeared regularly as soloist, recitalist, chamber orchestra performer, and clinician. He has been featured as a soloist with the Philharmonic in more than 75 performances under Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, and Leonard Bernstein. Mr. Smith has been on the faculty at numerous national and international music festivals. |
