I'm collaborating on a new band which wishes to use synthesized tones often and too much, think Pink Floyd meets Weather Report and turns avant-garde. Instead of buying a ton of stomp boxes, I'm looking for a way to convert the audio signal out of my guitar (or microphone, trumpet, or what have you) into a MIDI signal which can control a synthesizer or other sound module without selling my car. Somehow, in the back of my mind I recall small computer modules which could do just that. Either that, or I may just figure that a dirt cheap laptop is the way to go for this. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

There's a guy called Oren Marshall who does electrified Tuba craziness. I think he uses a microphone that goes into a small hole drilled in his mouthpiece, and then gets fed through a bunch of electronics. Might not be midi, I'm not sure, but I think it produces a "clean" sound with no tuba overtones which makes adding effects easier.

I think I've seen Nick Payton using a similar thing.
