| Fortissimo User | In Response to Glenn's Question: Rather than hijack Chuck's thread I'll respond here: Glenn... the story behind that concert is: Our community band was fortunate enough to have been able to form a relationship with Dr. Howard Cable ( Cable, Howard ). A local ranch owner, Mr. Ralph Thrall III, heard a concert and asked Dr. Cable why he hadn't written any western music... Cable replied "Because nobody's asked me to". Ralph responed "I'm asking". So... the first effort was something called "McIntyre Ranch Country" and you can hear it at our band's website ( LCBS XMAS POSTER 2005 ) in the upper right corner. This is the piece of music that you can buy the music for that is referenced on the ranch website. (My daughter is playing lead horn on that recording...I'm buried in the back of the trumpet section.) Since then that music has been played and (I believe) recorded by the Hannaford Street Silver Band of which Dr. Cable is an honorary director. Obviously that music is all "arrangements" of old, western stuff with a unique addition at the end called "The Owl Dance" which is an honour to the local, Plains Indians. Well, Mr. Thrall enjoyed the effort and asked Dr. Cable "OK, so you can arrange music.. but can you WRITE music?" Once again the wheels went into motion. Howard asked Ralph what he had in mind and Ralph produced some pictures and books by Charlie Russell, the Western artist and author from many years (decades!) back. Using pictures from the books, Howard created themes around each picture and put them together as a 4-part suite titled "Good Music, Good Medicine.. a Tribute to Charlie Russell". That photo was taken during the premier of the piece. The concert itself was a kind of fun event... a cow was auctioned off along with a whole bunch of other memorabilia (some of it museum quality) and we had an absolute blast. And that's the story of the hats and scarfs; aren't you glad you asked!? Last edited by Tootsall; 07-27-2007 at 09:29 PM. |

| Forte User | I knew there would be a great story to go with that. Thanks for sharing. That's quite a band you've got there!
