![]() | Road Bike Question Hey all, I posted on here about road biking last summer when I was buying a bike, so I've got another question and thought I'd give it a shot... I'm looking at trainers. I just signed up for the Minnesota Ironman (a 62 mile non-competitive "ride"), which is the last Sunday in April, and I'd like to get myself in shape (and used to being in the saddle for several hours at a time). I don't really even know what to look for... I need something to simulate a level ride (there aren't too many hills on the Ironman course) and not make too much noise in the process. Thanks guys, Jimi |

| Re: Road Bike Question I use a Cycle-Ops Fluid 2 trainer (but not as much as I should). It is absolutely great, period. I would definitely recommend a fluid trainer over a Mag trainer (quieter, more reliable), though they are more expensive. I think the CycleOps 2 lists for about $299, but you can save a lot if you look around (I got mine at a one day sale last year for $199). Read some reviews at roadbikereview.com. Here's a direct link to the reviews of this model (but read about others too). CycleOps Fluid 2 Reviews at RoadBikeReview.com -Stu |

| Re: Road Bike Question Jimi, I do a lot of road riding and I would agree with Stu. The CycleOps is the best out there but you'll pay for it too.... The best thing for you is really ROLLERS but not everyone can use them. It will force you to spin "circles" and there is great benefit in that when you get back on the road. If you haven't been turned on to PERFORMANCE Bikes do check them out. No one seems to be able to compete with them on prices. Performance Bike - Home for all your cycling needs! Another site to consider... but not cheap.. Welcome to Colorado Cyclist -- your best source for pro cycling gear at great prices! Training DVD's.. Spinervals, Cycling Products CycleOps also gives you a nice training DVD with Coach Troy. If you are a Lance fan then you'll like what Chris Carmichael is doing... Carmichael Training Systems | Chris Carmichael Good luck on the Ironman!!! I'm not a great swimmer and not a big fan of running... so the sitting sports are more my speed... LOL. Channel changer Ironman might be something I could really do well in... |

![]() | Re: Road Bike Question Rogerio and Stu, Thanks so much for the feedback. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Cycle-Ops. I've heard a lot of good things about the fluid trainers as opposed to the magnetic ones. Rogerio- How exactly do the rollers work? I checked them out online but I can't visualize exactly how the bike fits on. What keeps you from falling over? Thanks, Jimi |

| Re: Road Bike Question Jimi, The bikes (and you) just sit on the rollers.. and you go, go, go. It's a matter of balance, speed and a lot of physics. The recommended way to get started is to find a doorway. The bike is placed on the rollers, you get on while holding the doorway and start pedaling. Your motion will raise you up and then it's a matter of balance and speed. The front wheel is somewhat supported by sitting in between the two front rollers, but it will still require a lot of skill to keep it from turning (L or R). I was able to learn fairly quickly, but I know lots of folks that just could not and after a few falls gave up. The benefits outweigh the difficulty. The rollers force you to spin circles. You begin to benefit greatly from the up stroke. After training on the rollers you will see your road work improve dramatically. I'm sure you are using clipless pedals and that is the only way a roller will help you (to be able to work on the up stroke). Some companies offer a fork mount, but I think that is really counter productive. You get no benefit from it other than spinning. Do you know of anyone who is willing to lend you their rollers for you to try? At $150 it's a real investment to only find out it's not for you. The other option is to find a store that will let you bring in your bike to try it. Offer to sign a waiver in case you go flying off. I'm here if you have any more questions.
