The Rules!

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...OOLS/609070335

This school district is located about 5 miles from Detroit, Michigan. It's a tough school district with a lot of knucklehead kids.

When I first saw this story I thought, "Wow, that's kinda tough."

Being originally from that area I can tell you maybe it's about time!

Kids these days can be animals if you let them. I remember some of these kids would just walk out in front of my truck when school would let out as if to say I dare you to hit me! You have no idea how badly I wanted to trun one of them into a hood ornament after endouring many weeks of that.

And for the parents to support the kids breaking the rules; well I guess that just shows you the root of the problem eh?

The root of about 98% of the student problems in schools are the parents. If the parents of the troublemakers and/or poor performing students would do what they're supposed to (raise their children), we wouldn't need all these other stupid rules.

The policy, a copy of which was mailed to parents in July, applies to all grade levels and bans everything from sandals to T-shirts with most logos, baggy, tight or long jeans, flip-flops, skirts and shorts above the knee, hooded sweatshirts and fleece. More than 700 parents signed petitions claiming it's too strict.
These restrictions are ridiculous.

Two students were sent home for wearing t-shirts with the first ammendment printed on them. Don't you see the irony? And just what exactly is so bad about sandals? Or jeans that are baggy or tight?

If the school really wants to make the students look presentable they should introduce a smart, formal uniform. If they aren't going to do that then they should limit their clothing rules to prevent obscenity, and nothing more.

Your point is well made! I too thought like you at first however after applying what I know from living in Lincoln Park, Michigan I can tell you no. I don't think it's too strict at all.

I may be wrong but I believe what started this was one of these little snot nose punks wearing a tee-shirt in with a sexual explicit phrase on it.

Rules aren't necessary if we all use common sense.

The rule is now no tee-shirts with logos over 2 inches. I appluad the school for upholding their new rules even when they are being applied the United States Constitution being worn.

Last year the kids were not wearing the constitution on their chests; this is nothing more then opportunistic kids/parents that are trying to break the school.

It does not bother me at all; especially the more I reflect on it.

I agree with Clarino. Those rules are just going way to far. The t-shirt with the amendment on it is almost offensive! That is our country, our constitution. For someone to say you arn't allowed to wear that is almost a form of government rebellion or treason (on a very very minor level, but nevertheless its wrong).

I understand the flip-flops, but only because I wore flip-flops once and I got my toenail riped off by a door opening and it hurt real bad. And I suppose the cargo pants might be ok because a student could easily smuggle a pistol or something in, but its stupid because you can smuggle a pistol in in a back pack too.

I understand that this may not be the best school, or in the best area of town, but I don't see how rediculas dress codes are going to help too much in improving students behavior.

The Moronic parents are more concerned that their little bastards can express themselves than learn to be intelligent students.

And when they finish what little bit of schooling they make it through...possibly even to HS graduation, they can then recite the cry of the uneducated American student... "You want fries with that?"

School is for learning, not a place to express your inner feelings or your fashion sense.

If the kids can't cope with a dress code, let them stay at home and join their parents in the unemployment line and sit on their fat butts watching Maury and Oprah.

No wonder I home schooled my boys.

It is obvious that the parents had those Tshirts made up just to see what the administration would do when the shirts they made violated the rules.

The problem is you have to cater to the lowest common denominator, which is some f*cktard kid wearing his gang crap in school. We wouldn't want to infringe upon the rights of the problem children, that would make sense. So, they shotgunned the problem. If parents have a problem w/the rule, they should address the parents of the children who created a situation where the administration felt they needed the rule in the first place.

I find it very hard to find any sympathy for the kids. This is a in my day story ---no shirts with any writing of any kind [except for our school name], shirts must be tucked in pants, no shorts, no capris, no sandals,no motorcycle boots, skirts must be within 2 inches of the floor when the girl kneels, no jeans, hair must not be on fore head or over the ears, and so forth.
Guess what - we all accepted it and moved on. when someone got sent home the second time for not following the "rules" they were not allowed back until a parent brought them back to school and had a meeting with the dean of boys or girls. the kids just don't get it now, I talked to a HR person and they can't get over young people showing up for a job interview dressed like slobs, purple hair, tattoos on the neck, piercings, chewing gum and stopping to talk on the cell phone to friends about nothing during the interview. we have failed as parents to instill common decency and respect in our youth, that is why I am so uplifted when I meet young people who are just plain decent and treat us old people with respect and you know what - it seems like the youth involved in fine arts are the cream of the crop. Rules are rules. A society needs rules so that it can operate in a lawful fashion. Throughout your life you will run into rules, some logical, some apparently illogical, and some just plain "stupid". But they ARE rules and the sooner you get used to that idea the better.

I agree that it's a bit like removing all the cutlery from aircraft meals... a ballpoint pen or a plastic knife can be just as dangerous as a metal fork or a steakknife (OK.. so nobody serves steak on aircraft). It was a senseless and poorly-thought out rule... but it was a RULE at the time. Get over it and move on; eventually it'll be corrected.

What's wrong with cargo (tactical?) pants (well, maybe except for those pants in which the "cargo" appears to be all carried below the belt and in behind) when, as someone else pointed out, you need a backpack loaded down with 40 lb of books and mp3 players and who-knows-what-else to survive your "day at school"? Senseless..... but it's a rule.

I tell my kids... "Maybe you disagree with the teacher... but just remember who it is that evaluates your classwork and assigns your test marks and will be in the position of power over you... never forget that." They don't like it (heck, neither did I when I was their age), but at least they've been given something to chew over.

The more dense a population is, the more rules there need to be obeyed: witness some of the "laws" in places like Singapore and Japan, etc. There are expectations of "acceptable behaviour" in any society; even within organized crime "societies". Woe betide the person who breaks those rules. (bring up the soundtrack from The Godfather).

I'm absolutely WITH those who would put restrictions on the "cute sayings" that are to be found on some T-shirts & hats. And for Heaven's sake... TAKE YOUR STUPID BASEBALL CAP OFF WHEN INSIDE A BUILDING!
