![]() | Science Olympiad Because I have a music masters and a physics masters I am regularly tapped for both coaching and judging the even of Science Olympiad called "The Sounds of Music." First, if you don't what Science Olympiad, is is a junior high and high school competition that can result in scholarship money for the winners. The intrinsic value is the advanced study the kids get involved with. There are many events most of which involve designing and building things. There are also some competitive tests, too. This is a team effort and many kids get into this. "The Sounds of Music" event has the kids designing and building acoustic musical instruments. I am a judge at the regionals and state (in Illinois) each year and I have judged the national event once. In this capacity I see many mistakes kids make in designing the instruments and many more mistakes in discussing the design. When the events coordinators ask me to come coach their coaches, this is the sort of thing I have to address. However, as a dual career person (teaching by day and gigging and least two nights a week plus the required practicing) with two kids, I find I can't make all of the coaching sessions. So, I created this page initially to address the Sounds of Music event. However, this will expand into a physics of music page completely in general. Here is the direct link: Nick Drozdoff If you are a student entering this event, drop by. If you know a student entering this event, drop by! If you are a parent, teacher or student and you've never heard of Science Olympiad, check out this link: Science Olympiad National Home Page I hope to bump into some of you at the competitions! Peace. Nick Drozdoff
