![]() | Speakers? Hey all, I am looking to find a better pair of speakers on a college budget. Today, it seems like most companies are putting all ther innovation into surround sound systems, instead of quality stereo speakers for music listening. I was thinking of picking up a pair of vintage Bose 501 Series II's for around $200, with recently re-foamed 10" woofers. Does anyone have or currently use these and how are they for classical music? Also, any other suggestions of really great stereo speakers would be nice. Boston Acoustics still makes some great ones for decent prices, but they are out of my price range at $700 a piece.

| Pianissimo User | I would humbly suggest that you stay away from Bose. They use cheap inferior drivers in a cheaply made box that equals less than ideal sound, IMHO. You can do WAY better for equal or less money. I can expand on this if necessary. You have MANY options out there, and here are a few: B&W - DM303 (90% of the world's classical recordings are monitored on B&W) Paradigm - Atom, Titan, Mini Monitor, Studio 20 NHT - SB2 and SB3 Triangle - Titus 202 Athena - Audition B1.2, B2.2 Epos - ELS3 Parts Express - BR1 (These are available in a kit; they provide everything and you assemble them in about an hour. Fantastic for the money!) Magnepan - MMG AV123 - x-ls Monitor Audio - Silver S1 All of the above should come in under $750/pair new, or close to it. I have owned or spent extensive time with most of these. Other brands to condsider: PSB, Alon, Totem, Wharfdale, Energy, Mission, Polk, Dynaudio, Spendor, and countless others. Look on www.audiogon.com for some good used deals. That can be a great way to go. Also, do not rule out the small custom builders for kits and fully assembled speakers. A few names are: GR Research, AV123, Parts Express, and RAW Acoustics. They often provide the best value, meaning the highest quality drivers, crossovers, and cabinets without the markups of the big companies. I have been down this road many times. I'll be happy to provide any help I can. Also ask Mr. Clean, for he is an audio nut like myself.

| Pianissimo User | Sorry if I'm bothering you, but listening to and studying music is vital to your education and progression on the trumpet. If you want this posted somewhere else, ask the moderators to move it. He asked and I gave him my humble opinions. I have a feeling this may help more than one person. Regards, Eric

![]() | Sorry trumpetpat but I think that's a very valid question and an informative response. I need to listen to the great players on a good system, maybe you're different. Creative are fine rigged up to the home PC but for my purposes Maurice Andre sounds like the Tastee Bros through them. Regards, Trevor |

![]() | there are several efficient speakers out there one would be klipsch and the other is dahlquist on a budget these are the way to go. they produce the highest quality sound with minimal receiver out put sure there are better speakers out there but they require tons of wattage in order to sound as good as the ones just mentioned. |

| Piano User | Not exactly for a college budget, but I've grown very fond of Velodyne speakers, they have a LOT of clarity to them, and the sub doesn't get too boomy when the bass drum or low strings start to push it. My brother has a set of those with a Harmon Kardan receiver and his system sounds incredible, I myself have a nice set of RCA speakers with receiver (one of the the higher end RCA systems if there is such a thing) and a Sony sub that gets the job done pretty well considering I only payed about $300 for everything, good enough for now. Hope this helps!

![]() | I have a pair of the small bookself speakers by Polk, good sound at lower volumes. As we say around here -no highs, no lows, must be Bose. Dave

![]() | I bought a set of Yamaha Bookshelf speakers on sale. I'll be honest and say I did so simply because they were CHEAP! I love them and they opnly set me back about $100. Look and see what comes on sale in your area, As products are updated to include new looks much of the older high quality speakers will come on sale!
