![]() | A step in the right direction! http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...RO05/606050368 Good to see Michigan trying to enact some legislation that does some good. To me drunk driving is an un-excusable offense that is totally avoidable. I would support much more extreame measures then this to curb this; but again this is a step in the right direction for Michigan.

![]() | The problem with drunk driving is it is a crime that transcends all groups. This includes judges, cops, lawyers etc.... I think because of that at least in MN our legislature is not insistent on more harsh penalties for drunk drivers. MN does have a felony DWI law. Frankly, you have to be a complete moron to get one. (We do have plenty of those). You can get probation for Criminal Vehicular Homicide in MN. Which is causing the death of another w/an automobile w/either gross negligence or what is more common, chemical impairment. The typical time people do serve for that offense seems to range from 2-4 yrs. Imagine getting 2-4 yrs for shooting someone in the head. It most likely would not happen. But for some reason society in MN finds it acceptable if you are drunk and driving a car. I watched a gal die because we could not remove her from the vehicle to administer first aid (I don't know if it would have helped or not) but the offender got a whopping 2 yrs if I remember correctly. The judge even gave the offender a couple months to make arrangements to get things in order before she went away. The offender at the time had a alcohol concentration of over .20. I've cleaned people off the road with a shovel, I've gone to too many houses to tell next of kin that their son/daughter/wife/husband (you get the point) that their relative is dead. Heck, just last week I popped a drunk driver. Drove from Madison, WI to MN. No booze in the car, and they did their drinking in Madison. The person was almost 3 times over the limit. Needless to say I have very little tolerance for impaired drivers. |
