Manny Laureano has a spectacular aura about
There are no words...

This is a performance of Barber's Adagio for Strings conducted by Leonard Slatkin. The orchestra is a British orchestra but I don't know which one. I'm sure our resident Brits will figure it out as they see what musicians are playing.

It's a very impassioned performance, very touching as there are clips of the orchestra interspersed with some from the 9/11 murders but not in the way you might envision. It's a unique video. I've never seen this one. It is neither cheap nor maudlin in its treatment of the subject.

One rather amazing moment: there is a shot of a NYC firefighter commander who is the spitting image of Arturo Toscanini, the conductor who premiered the Adagio as a string orchestra piece. He's an older gentleman, seated in a chair and you can see his entire body as opposed to the close-ups that are throughout most of the video. Striking resemblance.

As I say, this one is worth the 10 and a half minutes it takes to listen to and watch.

Clarino is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: There are no words...

Thanks for posting that Manny.

About the orchestra, the youtube blurb says "the BBC Orchestra", so it's probably the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Although I thought I recognised someone from the Hallé, so maybe the BBC Phil.

I see what you mean about the guy that looked like Toscanini. Spooky.

Manny,

Thnk you for that.

That hauntingly beautiful piece of music and those images...really give me a time to reflect.

And all the emotions, from saddness to compassion to anger all over again.

Thanks for finding and posting that.

Re: There are no words...

Quite a nice clip. Thanks for sharing it Manny. The music and/or the photos can bring you to your knees on their own merit. Putting them together this way has an impact I can't even explain.

I cannot ever hear the Barber "Adagio" without melting into a puddle of emotion. Where's the Kleenex?

The opening shot of the Towers does the same.....I miss them. I am going to NYC next week too.

Yeah, it was a different sort of tribute, wasn't it?

Kiss the city for me... I miss NYC these days a lot, too. Hey, Alex... there's a GREAT restaurant for breakfast on the same side of the street where you're staying. It's one of those cool places where everybody's Greek (but then, that was a while ago, they're probably all Puerto Ricans or Mexicans now!). It's only a block or so from Carnegie and really good. see if you can figure out which of the many places it is and you'll have a breakfast that lasts all day (in the good way!).

Re: There are no words...

Did you ever see the original piece ABC did? (a lot of the photos have the ABC logo on them) I saw that special and couldn't keep my eyes dry then either. They were interviewing surviving officers (police and fire) and there were a few that lost sons. There was one man they showed several times and he lost two sons in the carnage.

Now.....about your breakfast recommendation.....Is this place better than going to "Wolf's" Manny? I was thinking of hitting them up for breakfast. They still put out the pickles and treats no matter what time of day. LOL.

I am also planning to get to Tribeca for dinner at a place called "Walker's". It is over 100 years old and a charming brown cafe with great food, drink and music. It is where Wall Street suits, funky artists and police/firemen all gather to chat it up and throw back a few and leave pretensions at the door. Great eats too. I will blow a kiss to the hole in the sky where those beautiful towers still stand in my mind.

It's the BBC Symphony Orchestra - Slatkin was resident conductor there until a few years ago. I believe the performance is from the Last Night of the Proms, shortly after 9/11 - the programme was controversially changed to reflect the recent events in NYC ( John Adams' Short Ride In A Fast Machine was due to be performed, but was dropped for obvious reasons, while the Barber was added).

I'm still trying to figure out when I will eat. That line-up is so killer that I don't want to miss anything!
