| Pianissimo User | The latter. I found out about the majority of my favorite bands through shared music. Of course, I support the bands as well. I buy the CDs of the bands I like and see them live. And I believe the RIAA saying that CD sales are down as a result of downloading music is bulls**t. I beilieve it's a result of itunes and other stores allowing people to buy single tracks, the decline in decent music, and more bands switching to independent labels as opposed to RIAA endorsed labels.

![]() | If it were good music, people would have no problem paying anominal price for it. I don't mind paying for a Doc cd or for certain artists because their music is good. Unfortunately, most of what comes out now is A) Crap and B) used to support over-hyped thugs or wannabe's. $20 is rediculous for a cd of 10 songs (and cd's are cheaper to produce than tapes or albums were!).

| Mezzo Piano User | Personaly, I just don't like downloading music. I just like buying the cds and then putting that onto my iPod, I like having a cd incase something happens and I loose the file, I still have the music. Plus, most of what I listen to is hard to find on those download websites anyway...

![]() | It is stealing. When you pay musicians for a session, when you pay the engineers and producers to make the recording for you, when you pay the distributors what they need, and find that people are downloading free you'll realize it's stealing, too. ML |

| Pianissimo User | I think it's different for different people. I don't consider it stealing, but then I probably use it for different things than most people. I use it more as a library. If I like the music I downloaded, I'll buy the CD. If I don't, then I'll delete it, as I don't have room for terrible music on my computer. I can see why people are against it and they have a right to as well. The majority of downloaders I'd doubt buy as much music as I do. Another reason I buy CDs is because I like owning the CD. The beautiful artwork, the near indesetructibility (whereas my computer sometimes deletes files). It's for this reason that I don't use itunes. If I'm gonna buy a song, I'm not gonna buy a terrible quality 128 AAC file, where I can only burn it on to five CDs. I like owning the CDs, also for the fact that I am supporting the artist.

![]() | This is always a "touchy" topic. In addition to playing trumpet I play the bass. I have the privilage of working for a hip hop label as their studio bassist. All of the artists on the label freely distribute their music through various means. To them CD sales mean almost nothing. The price to record, mix/master, engineer, distrubute... etc. a CD is believe it or not extremely low. It takes 100 copies of a CD to pay off all of the costs needed to make the CD. It really does not take that much to make an album. All of our musicians get paid a decent amount, our producers get paid fine amounts, as do anyone who does mixing/mastering work. Even with all of that, the cost is quite small. The money that the artsists make comes almost entirely from doing live shows. However, this is only one genre of music, and I'm sure that other genres take in money at different percentages.
