Actually, Riley is a RINO (Republican In Name Only). He's been on the outs with 'Bama conservatives since his first year in office when he tried to pass a multi-BILLION dollar tax package. It was soundly defeated by the public; and, guess what -- there was actually a budget surplus at the end of that fiscal year! He hasn't been able to get anything done because the Alabama legislature is controlled by the Democrats (surprising, huh?). I would have to disagree with the anonymous critics in the article who say that crime is out of control here in Alabama. It's no more than other places of similar size.

Hey Matt,

Howdy neighbor!

Yeah, I had assumed most of what you said.

Crime is crime and it happens everywhere. Alabama does not strike me as a "wild west" sort of place. Granted, I've only really spent time in Phoenix City, AL just accross the Chattohochee River from Columbus, GA.

I'm originally from the Metro Detroit area. So nothing down here really bothers me. I have to laugh when my co-workers are like "Don't go to that part of Columbus it's really bad!"

There's nothing down here that strikes me as really bad. When I was in my first marriage me and my ex were very poor and had to live in a bad neighborhood in southwest detroit.

We'd go to bed by gunfire every night as gangs fought over turf. Crack Cocaine ruled the streets. Ahhhhh how I don't miss those days.

One morning the police were in the alley behind our rented home and were drawing the chalk outline around someone who didn't survive the night.

This happend a lot. So I laugh at my co-workers down here as I don't think they really understand just where it is that I came from.

Best to you!
John

Seems that the anonymous critics are not saying that crime is out of control. They are saying that they think the law [incorrectly] implies that.

Funny that you mention Phenix City (Spelled without the O). In the 1930's-50's, it would have put downtown Detroit to shame. It was run by some pretty powerful guys who regularly had the soldiers from Columbus robbed and beaten up, or killed, in the brothels. There was also a town wide lottery system. Illegal liquour, etc. Eventually, it got so bad that the National Guard was called in the town was put under martial law. This was after the assassination of state attorney general-elect Albert Patterson on the streets of Phenix City. There's a pretty good book about it called The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama.

Yes, unfortunately; ... crime is everywhere. It is not "hopeless", though.

Alabama. Scenic countryside. Heat, oppressive humidity, bugs, red-necks.

Have a nice day.

Only with things that can fit through your wedding band (which actually was in the Alabama constitution at one point!).
