Tip?

So I order Chili's take out and pull up to the designated curbside pickup parking spot and am faced w/a dilemna. Do I tip the guy who comes out to my car, takes my $$ and brings my food to me?

Thoughts? Any etiquette pro's out there?

Re: Tip?

Hollow-tips are not a good idea.
I would venture that tipping, though not required at a fast food establishment (and a real fun way of screwing the till up at some, like ordering "just a cup of coffee, please" will do at Starbucks) would be a cool thing to do. Being a trumpeter here at TM you have already established your coolness, so do whatever feels right. It's cool.

Re: Tip?

I would think that any service where somebody brings you something at your request is eligible for tipping. Tip, by the way, is actually an anacronym for "To Insure Promptness" (or so I've heard).

Re: Tip?

Tipping has really changed. I remember the first big change was going to a Caribou or Starbucks and seeing a tip jar. I said to myself "Tipping? For me to stand here and for someone to tell someone else to make my coffee? That's weird." I started to leave change in the jar when I noticed something interesting: nobody ever said "Thank you" when I'd leave the change.

After noticing that a few times I said to heck with it. If I'm going to tip you for doing nothing, I'd at least like to be acknowledged for my aquiescing to peer pressure and making a cup of coffee even a greater expense than it should be.

So, I don't leave change unless the person actually pretends to be genuinely happy to see me, greets me, and makes me feel like less of a fool for not bringing a thermos of coffee from home.

Re: Tip?

I would put tipping the carry out person in the same category as leaving a buck for the dude who takes your plates and brings you one fountain drink at the Chinese Buffet. I'd give em a buck if I felt like it.

Re: Tip?

Yes. I would tip the person that brings the food to the car. I always tip 15 percent when the food is brought to me.

Now, here is my dilemma. I go to a traditional barber shop. I don't tip the owner. I do tip the other guy. The other guy has a membership at the same rifle range I belong to so I think I should keep him happy in case I want to use some of his targets or spotting scope. Is this the correct protocol? (Don't answer, it is 40cal's thread.)

(40cal, the NRA convention is April 13-15. You can stay at my house if you want. Most of us are taking off work to attend. You can drive my mustang to the metro station.)

Re: Tip?

I tip my barber and not the shop.
I tip any wait staff at a bar or restaurant
When I bring one of the family cars to my former job, I tip whoever details it because I know how nice it feels to work on a car for anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours and get a tip. Anything is appreciated, even if you just offer to get me a drink from the store.

Re: Tip?

Yeah interesting topic Dave....

I noticed that those tip cans Manny spoke of are turning up everywhere. I saw one at Papa John's Pizza the other day. I couldn't believe it...

Let me see I call and order a pizza; you make it; I come in and get it; and then pay you for making it. You want a tip too! I don't think so.....

Now back on topic; yeah Dave in your situation I think that tipping is something that I would do if the service was up to standard!

Re: Tip?

That's what I mean, john, it's a bandwagon that employees are jumping on. It's basically taking advantage of American generosity. Don't believe me? Travel abroad and check out the tipping practices of various countries. It goes from being incuded in the bill, rounding out to the nearest 0, 10%, etc.

When it comes to waiter/esses at a restaurant, I am very generous especially if I figure out that s/he is a student. But this business of tipping reflexively is not good I think. My rule is 15% for basic "What'll ya have" service, 20% and above for a smile, good attitude, and great service, 10% for a sour puss who provides good service, and a complaint to the manager for lousy service from a sourpuss.

By the way... shouldn't that be "To Ensure Promptness"?

That's why I go visit the drive-thru window instead.
