| .. and on this day, come sing with me: Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling, From glen to glen and down the mountain side; The summer's gone, and all the leaves are falling; 'Tis ye, 'tis ye must go, and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow; 'Til I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow; Danny boy, Oh Danny boy, I love you so. And when ye come and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be. Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear, 'though soft ye tread around me, And all my grave shall linger sweeter be, Then ye will bend and tell me that ye love me, And I shall sleep in peace until ye come to me. Thank you, vets, those with us today and those with us in spirit. ML |

| Pianissimo User | There are men, on both sides of my family, who have served this Great Nation in the Armed Services. My Great Grandfather was a Rough Rider, wounded as he rode beside Roosevelt up San Juan Hill. My father served as an officer in the Transportation Corps in the early 60's before the Viet Nam troop build ups. I served 8 years as an Army Engineer, including time in Germany as The Wall fell, Turkey during the Iraq buildup and then in Desert Storm. As a young Lieutenant, I served as Escort Officer for 15 funeral details, presenting the flag to loved ones, including the family of a WWI Medal of Honor recipient! What an honor to present honors to that man! My wife's family has many who served including a uncle that retired from the Air Force and another who retired after serving in WWI We are a family proud of our service to the "greatest Nation on God's green earth" (thank you Micheal Medved). I salute those men and women who serve us now, knowing the hardships they endure. I also pray daily for their families, as they endure even greater hardships, not knowing the details of their loved ones' lives. May God continue to bless this great nation! To all who have served and are currently serving, protecting our freedoms and liberties, I stand straight and true a salute, with a deep gratitude for your sacrifices! I would find it too difficult to stand at attention and render an acceptable playing of TAPS. I could never render it with enough dignity and pride to be acceptable to anyone who has served in our Armed Forces. | As with others, I am fortunate to have a history of service in the armed forces in my family, although my great grandfather didn't exactly serve with the U.S forces- He was part of the Honor Guard that escorted Jeff Davis to Montgomery to take the oath of office as President of the Confederacy. Since then, however, my father (SSGT, USMC), an uncle (LtCol, USAAF, Europe) and another uncle (Capt, USAAF, Pacific) have served, all in WWII. I am retired as a Chief Warrent Officer from the Army National Guard, where I served as Commander of the 41st Army Band. I have always been proud of the members of my family that have served. Fortunately, all came back, including one uncle who was a guest of the German government for about a year. |
