WATCH THIS Jiffy Lube ripping off customers

Be careful out there...

Hidden cameras catch Jiffy Lube dealers ripping people off.

I'd like to say I'm suprised, but if you look at the caliber of employee at a lot of places like that, BUYER BEWARE.

Thanks for the heads up bro'!!!

This will always happen frankly, where complete ignorance of the driver goes hand in hand with easy temptation of low intellect.

A similar 'sting' with micro cameras here in the UK a couple of years back showed the mechanics actually breaking parts of cars so that they could then show the owners what they had 'found' when repairing the car,..and needing "urgent repair".

Actually, you don't need to have a tiny camera/TV production team to do your own 'sting'.....several years ago I became suspicious about the small village garage where my wife got her car 'serviced', so while they were making out the bill with the cost of a gallon of premium priced oil added, I lifted the bonnet, removed the oil filler cap and put my finger inside into the oil. I then enquired in the office if they had changed the oil and was assured that they had done so, so I raised my black finger in the air and asked if they might have used old oil by mistake! With smooth efficiency they sent someone to check with the mechanic and guess what?.....both mechanics had thought the other had done it!

My wife assured me that it was a genuine mistake so on the next 'sevice' I lodged small pieces of black cotton into the fixings on several maintainance items including the oil and air filter mounts....when the car came back with these still in place my wife sadly agreed to take her car elsewhere.

Hear about the blonde who was afraid that the auto repairman was going to rip her off but was relieved when he told her all she needed was turn signal fluid?

I often mark the oil filter to see if it's actually been changed. Quite often, unless I'm really busy, I'll do my own oil changes.

Question

Now I am a little nervous...My Passat has its 80,000 mile service due which the VW dealer tells me is the big one and costs around 400 bucks.....but how do I know they did what the service interval says they are supposed to do...when I am sitting there having a complimentary beverage in there waiting room or test driving a '07 model or whatever......I sure hope these types of scams are not happening with big name car dealers.....are you even allowed to go into the shop and watch the mechanic work? Is there a polite way to ask to see the old or bad parts?

You can ask them for the old parts, if they say no, leave and go somewhere else.

I'll guarantee you that it doesn't need $400 worth of work. Are they changing the timing belt? Is there anything wrong with the way it starts or runs? Are your brakes ok? Dealers have been known to charge $200 even though they barely do anything that isn't a standard oil change and a good look at your car.

In Michigan they are supposed to give you the old parts back unless you tell them that you don't want them. You don't want the old oil and filter back but those items are easy enough to check to make sure they're new.

My check engine light was coming on and when they ran diagnostics on it they told me it was the engine coolant temp sensor....which was causing my car not to turn over right away.....was interfering with the "computer" onboard. 90 bucks to replace that.
