When not playing? Hi Manny, This might be a stupid question but I don't think it's been asked. What to you do when your on stage but not playing. For instance, for me, sometimes I'm counting measures and thinking about my next entrance and how I will sound when I come in. Sometimes I'm counting and thinking, Why did I take this job? Sometimes I'm so moved by what I'm hearing that I count through my entrance and don't come in. Sometimes when I don't play for a movement I will read something unrelated to the show. That's the idea. I know that sometimes there can be long breaks for a trumpet and your on the stage.

Re: When not playing? All of the above, Joe... it depends on the day. I like to play attention for info that I can use with the MYS kids. Other times I just like to learn for learning's sake. Other times I'll tell a quick joke to a colleague... just normal, human things. The important thing is not be disruptive but if you're going to be disruptive, you need to amuse as many people as possible. ML

Re: When not playing? Engage a section member or trombone player who has an earlier entrance than you do. Make sure he misses his entrance. -cw-

It's actually really difficult to distract the trombones in my orchestra - they sit behind me and it looks surprisingly obvious if you turn around and "engage" them. The clarinets seem like a worthwhile line of enquiry though... Chris. | |

Re: When not playing? I hadn't thought about that.... The 3rd Clarnets sit directly in front of me... Time for fun!
