![]() | Who Killed the Trubine Car???? The Indianapolis 500 race is rapidly approaching. It is time for us to consider the ramifications of the ban on turbine cars. What would we be be driving today if turbine cars were allowed in the Indianapolis 500? Would we have Turbo-Electrics under our hoods? What fuel would be burn? Canola Oil perhaps or Soy bean oil? What other fuels would be available for the small but mighty turbine engine? Don't worry about politics. This is car talk. Now get a beer and lets talk horsepower. When I was taking my introductory training as a new engineering grad at Pratt & Whitney the field service guy teaching us how to tear a PT6 apart was the guy who helped Andy Granatelli with his effort in 1967. Parnelli Jones led 197 laps of the 200 lap race before a bearing failed. USAC banned the car the next year for fear that it would throw competition out the window. |

![]() | Re: Who Killed the Trubine Car???? [quote=Tootsall;296793]Turbine cars WERE allowed in the Indy 500. I know! I saw the race on TV. 197 laps and a $6 bearing. I've seen the cars at the motor speedway museum. I will continue with a literary bent. How many of you have read Andy Granatelli's biography, "They Call Me Mr. 500?" | Re: Who Killed the Trubine Car???? It must be an unbelievable feeling driving something like that. It would have to be like being in the middle of the world's most incredible crescendo when you're really torquing it up. Not for the faint of heart. Cool! ML |

Sort of like you say. The turbine car was quieter than the Offies. It was the first time in racing history that the driver could hear other cars approaching. They didn't approach much but he could hear them. He lapped a few of them. The Granatelli book is the best. | |

| Re: Who Killed the Trubine Car???? I’m hoping that Jay Leno’s car turns some heads! ![]() The 650-horsepower (400 lb.-ft. of torque) Leno original is powered by a Honeywell LT-101 turbine engine that runs on bio-diesel fuel. The engine sits in a modified Corvette Z06 hydroformed aluminum frame with aluminum and magnesium structural and chassis components. The vehicle's shell is an advanced construction of carbon fiber over Kevlar. |
