Is it wrong to check out cds from the library and put them on my iPod?

I mean, most of the cds they have at the library are classical, or classic rock where most of the bands are no longer around so buying the cd wouldn't really be supporting the artist, because well... they're gone.

Its just that, the other day I realized all I really have on my iPod is for the most part classical, broadway, and ska music wich most people don't really like. So this is the best way I could think of to sort of, expand, my taste of music. A couple of my friends say its wrong that I'm stealing from the library, but others say its perfectly fine, that that's what the library is there for.

So, is it wrong to do this? Like, I never felt guilty about it untill today when I noticed all the nice little old lady librarians that worked there and my friend was like, "Dude, you're stealing music from all those nice litle old ladies..."

Should I stop?

It is illegal, whether you class this as wrong is something that only your conscience can tell you.

Personally I have borrowed CDs from the library and done similarly in the past BUT only whilst I have been waiting for a new version to arrive - I borrowed the CD to see if it was one I wanted.

David,

While I can't speak with absolute authority on the subject I will say that you should definately check it out. I believe that it is not lawful for you to be doing that.

I'm sure some copyright laws are applicable somewhere. I'd hate to see you get the boom lowered on you like so many people did from the whole Napster thing!

The legal way to load the CD on your ipod would be to steal the cd from the library. You could also make a legal cassette copy for personal use, and play the original on your stereo system.
