Re: 4 Valve Bb Horn?

4 valve flugelhorns are more common than 4 valve Bb trumpet I believe.

Re: 4 Valve Bb Horn?

Marcinkiewicz also makes a 4 valve Bb which I'm sure is fantastic. My last Marcinkiewicz horn was a very fine instrument!

Re: 4 Valve Bb Horn?

Getzen makes a real nice four-valve Flugel. I owe one. I bought it at the time, because I could. The fourth valve tubing length is equal to the 1st and 3rd valves' tubing lengths. It would be the equivalent to having an "F" attachment on a Trombone. So, I guess on the Flugel Horn that would be a "G" attachment.
For the most part, I have seen players use the 4th valve as an alternate fingering for depressing 1+3, (using slides on the tubing, pre-tuned)
For me I like to use the G valve to extend the range of the instrument down to link down to the pedal registar. It's a great way to build lip strength when in a hurry! The horn has a larger bore than I would like for a jazz horn, but has a very "fat" full sound, especialy in the pedal tones.

Re: 4 Valve Bb Horn?

The only four-valve trumpets I have even heard of were quarter tone horns!

Re: 4 Valve Bb Horn?

Joe Marcinkiewicz has a custom 4-valve Bb on display in his showroom. It uses the valve block from his quarter-tone trumpet, but the 4th valve on this custom one does drop the pitch a fourth. Give him a call and ask if he'll build another one to order.

Here's a clip that features Lew Soloff playing a 4 valved Schilke Bb Trumpet. It was specially made for Lew, it is NOT a quarter tone trumpet. Think of a piccolo trumpet one octave lower
It will probably cost an arm and a leg to make another one.
