| Forte User | After getting a Bb... Then what? So the next Bb I'm going to get is going to be my first really nice horn. But anyways, since I'm gonna try and go both tracks, jazz and classical, what would be the next horn I should get? A C, A picc, or a Flugel? |

| Re: After getting a Bb... Then what? This will depend upon which genre you end up playing the most. In the U.S. a C trumpet would be the prime choice for classical. A picc or flugel are specialty items that you might eventually find need for, but the C is your next step. I don't currently own a C because I transpose to concert pitch on the fly effortlessly with a Bb horn. I am looking at the purchase of a good flugel for playing in church services. For myself, I can find no current need for a picc. We are all different in our musical tastes and this will determine which horn we need the most to play our chosen musical form. OLDLOU>> |

| Re: After getting a Bb... Then what? Are you playing more jazz combo/big band gigs, or orchestra/quintet/church gigs? If you're doing more jazz, definately a flugel - more classical a C. If you're doing the same amount of both, then just look for a good deal on either one to come your way - that always works! |

| Re: After getting a Bb... Then what? If you really want to be playing in the both classical and jazz genres, then you'll eventually want both a C and flugel. What are you doing more of now? A good flugel can be less money than a good C. You've posted before that you haven't been able to take lessons...the price of a good C or flugel will buy a lot of lessons! Jason. |

| Re: After getting a Bb... Then what? If you are studying classical trumpet in college, a C trumpet would probably be next. If you are playing jazz or in jazz ensembles/big bands you will need a flugelhorn. Flugelhorn is an expected double for a trumpet player in a big band, in college and professionally. I agree with Flugelgirl, depends on what kind of work you are doing more. I play a lot more flugelhorn than C trumpet these days, personally. i am more of a jazz/commercial trumpet player, but do get called for the occasional gig on C trumpet. This would probably be the opposite for more orchestral players. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: After getting a Bb... Then what? I wouldn't worry about the second horn until you have the first one, have saved for the second one and gotten your professors input. A lot of things can change in your life very quickly and time is best spent on the wonderful things happening now. Planning for a future horn can be great fun and as long as the anticipation doesn't slow down current progress everything is OK. The feeling that I get from a lot of your posts (I read almost all of them), is that jazz is currently a pretty strong magnet for you. That would make a flugel a great choice NOW. Regardless, any horn can be used to deliver an inspiring message. Practice, practice, practice! For the allround musician with equal ties to jazz and classical - you can get almost all of the orchestral work done well with a Bb, but many jazz things DO need that sexy mellow alto voice of a flugel. The C is only important when orchestral music becomes your focal point. Suggestion, start working on transposition today to extend your Bb time. That will give you a competitive edge in school with ALL ensembles. |

| Re: After getting a Bb... Then what? I would make my second horn a Picc. It will let you play a lot more music and help with jobs. I never play my flugel even in jazz band. Anything I play on the C trumpet can be done on B-flat. I know a lot of jazz guys that play weddings on picc. P.S. This should be post number 1,000 for me. This is like getting married again, this is the second time I hit 1,000 |
