![]() | Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? Hi there! I am keen on flugels and have noticed rotary valve flugels which seem to have a larger bore size than most other flugels - the typical German Flugelhorn from what I understand. Is there anyone out there that has played one, and could they offer any useful feedback to a recent intermediate high brass player. Many thanks PB

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? The bores on flugelhorns vary greatly--the Getzen Eterna, for example, has a .460 bore. The German flugelhorns generally take a trumpet shank, and in the wind bands their role is like the cornet--lots of fingerwork, and it is very common for players to use their trumpet mouthpieces on them. The Alexander four valved flugelhorn is played by Jimmy Owens, and Charles Lewis in his Empire Brass days played one too. The German flugels are fun to play, but I prefer the sound of the bigger bell on piston models. Hope this helps!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? I have both types. An east German predecessor to the B&S pro rotary (not so large of a bore, but bore size is not significant except as a marketing specification anyway) and a Getzen Eterna 4 valve with a big bell. They are two completely different animals. For jazz, the Getzen wins hands down: silky, sexy, smooth - great section sound. For wind band stuff, the rotary seems way more "precise" and "articulate". Like VB said, it is used instead of the cornet in germanic and Dutch wind band music so there is a lot of fast notes that it handles well. The two types do not blend well together. Duets are not really comfortable.

![]() | Re: Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? We had a guy who had a VF Cerveny to play and it sounded great. Had no problems blending it with a Cousenon piston horn. Just make sure you fill 'em up and make a FULL RICH sound and they should be A-OK.

![]() | Re: Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? when my wife and I were looking to buy a pair of matching flugals we were at WWBW and I asked to play their Cerveny flugal several times and they refused to bring it out, the guy said I would not like it so he wasn't going to bring it out. Oh Well. Dave

![]() | Re: Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? Sad was a pretty nice horn. Might have thought more of it because it was unique (to me) but I got a full rich sound that amazed a few even the guy who was trying to play it for the part (better trumpet player than me but no concept of flugal tone).

![]() | Re: Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? HI, guys! I play a Mirafone three valve Bb flugelhorn. My wife has a Kanstul Copper bell three valve piston flugelhorn. She loves hers, and I like mine. I'd like the Mirafone better with third valve trigger, but it's not too badly out of tune and I can lip D's down sufficiently. I've also played the Czerveny rotary, and found it ok. I've bought a couple of Czech antique flugels as well, one with four valves, and a couple of Russian flugels, and found them wanting in the intonation department. Good thing that they were relatively inexpensive. That's my experience, anyway! Later! Guy Clark South Bay Brass |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Anyone played a Rotary Valve Flugel? If the first valve slide is at 90 degrees to the leadpipe, you can use your right thumb to pull the first slide. A bit awkward at first, but it works!

Hi! I've tried that on most of my rotary instruments, and found that I can't do it without jostling the horn and making a noticible bump in my sound. It's not too bad, and I'm good at lipping things into tune. Thanx for the idea though!! Guy Clark South Bay Brass | |
