davner has a spectacular aura about
Bach stradivarius

Hi could any one help me identify what finish is used on Bach trumpets? It is silver and the guy I bought it from says it is silver plated but the tag in the case says it is clear lacquered any ideas how to tell the difference?
It is a lt 180 with 72 bell and 43 lead pipe.

If its silver colored - its silver
If its a golden brownish color - its lacquer

Well, it could be both. In the "olden days" a silver-colored trumpet could be either silver or nickel-plated but as far as I know, Bach has never done nickel so you are safe to assume that it is silver. As far as lacquer goes, it is a clear coating that is applied to prevent tarnish. It can be applied to either silver or brass. If the tag in the case is a document from Bach, it confirms that this one is silver plated with a lacquer coat on top. One way to test it is to take an ohmmeter (or a voltmeter with a resistance setting) and do a continuity test by touching two points (do it on the bottom caps or someplace that you won't scratch it) with the probes. If it shows continuity, then it is silver without lacquer. Very simple.

Re: Bach stradivarius

It is more likely just silver plated. Nice horn! 72* with a 43 leadpipe. Enjoy it!

I don't understand why we don't use someones post count the way we use feedback on ebay. One post and this is the question. It's obvious to me that this is someone with another screen name being funny.

It is a little funny and even funnier, that he got answers.

Thanks that was so easy I checked and it does have continuity so I guess it is silver. But I also checked on a lacquered trumpet to make sure that you were right yep no continuity on a lacquered trumpet.

Re: Bach stradivarius

Could be that they had two Bachs and got the cases mixed up.

That may seem the case but if you go to the Bach web page and check specifications they definitely do list silver trumpets with lacquer coating. So maybe it is not as simple as you suggest.

Re: Bach stradivarius

If you read the individual Bach Stradivarius specs, you see an "S" in the middle of the designation when it is silver plate: 180S37 for instance.

It does pay to click around and read all of the specs, even although they are written by marketing people and generally worthless.

Bach silverplate is not lacquered!
