![]() | I see these on the Bay all the time but they sell anywhere from $50.00 to $300.00 new. They look better than the trash horns but I don't know anyone who has one. All I want is a horn to play around on but I also don't want a throw away either. Are they any Good? Thanks Much

![]() | Re: Berkeley Flugel Horns - Any Good ??? Hello Rob.The cheapest, brand new Flugel that should play decent for general use, would be the Baptiste Flugel sold by the Sam Ash music company. The reviews it has are all good, and it is a small bore Flugel horn. If it has a removable tuning mouthpiece slide, and it appears the horn does. A GR replacement m.p. tuning slide may do wonders on one. I read where a couple of the Olds Clark Terry Flugelhorn players did this and greatly improved the sound and intonation on their Horns. Not sure what the GR lead pipe replacement costs though, might not be worth it on this type brand Flugel horn. Just bouncing around some ideas. There is one other, but in a larger bore of .460 sold by Muscians Friend made by the Barrington company. To me,i would prefer a smaller bore for a Flugel. Anything after these start around $800.00 and up. Anything cheaper would be just junk period. Good luck on your Flugel horn search. Let us know what you end up with. |

![]() | Re: Berkeley Flugel Horns - Any Good ??? Thanks guys thats what I thought. It threw me that some of them were selling for $300.00 or more, usually the junk horns don't sell for that much. I thought that maybe they had better models. ... I could use a nice lamp though ... LOL

![]() | Re: Berkeley Flugel Horns - Any Good ??? Hi, i saw a discussion earlier on one of the Berkeley trumpets, one person that wrote a review about them on ebay said that the horn was great overall, performing better than his kanstul trumpet. BUT he said after a about a year use, the valves and slides slowed down and he even said the trumpet thumb saddle had melted and bent in the sun. So since flugels and trumpets have valves and slides, im guessing this one will break down after about a year, how about saving up for a REAL flugel. hope that helped!!! |

Breakdown in a year? Wow, that "cat" must have been playing 24/7/365 days a year! I'd be saving my money to purchase a new or used "name brand" trumpet or flugel. If parts on the horn was melting, what does that say about the quality of brass? I would go with Yamaha or other major brand where quality is not an issue. Best wishes, Lloyd Last edited by lmf; 01-23-2009 at 09:06 PM. | |
