Best Beginner Trumpet? *I apologize for the ignorance of this question. I'm sure this sort of thing gets asked frequently.* One of my piano students wants to take up trumpet. I'm mostly a sax player so I know very little about trumpets and trumpet brands. Offhand I would recommend a yamaha, king, or bach but that's only based on what I've seen and heard...not really firsthand experience. What would you recommend for a beginning trumpet student (he's 11)? On a side note, I told him to pick up a trumpet mouthpiece to get used to buzzing to make the transition into trumpet a little easier for him. What mouthpiece would you recommend? Is this a good idea? -shane Last edited by snizzle : 12-13-2007 at 04:57 PM.

Re: Best Beginner Trumpet? There is some variation with every player but by far the most widely used beginning mouthpiece is a 7C wether by Bach or another company. As far as the trumpet is concered, just about anything will work for a beginner but a decent student model from any of those companies with last through alot of growth with the player. Hope this helps.

Re: Best Beginner Trumpet? Can you recommend a decent starter horn? Perhaps specific models? This will likely be a used instrument. They don't have much money, so they need to recognize a good deal from a scam when looking for used trumpets. Thanks! -shane

![]() | Re: Best Beginner Trumpet? That very first note on the mouthpiece can be crucial. Many teachers like to hold the mouthpiece in the proper position--the inside of the rim above and below the fleshy part of the lips because muscle memory can be so very important. As for brand names, I too like Getzen--good design, well built, fairly priced. |

Re: Best Beginner Trumpet? What is the difference between a Bach 7C mouthpiece and a 'no-name' brand such as this: Fermata Music Studios, LLC Is the difference in quality worth the difference in price for someone that just wants to get his feet wet? -shane

Re: Best Beginner Trumpet? Most beginner horns, if bought new, come with a mouthpiece. However, it might be a wise idea to buy a cheap used horn, since there's no guarantee he will stick with it. I remember when I was a beginner around his age, and the local shop owner (former trumpet player) suggested the piece that normally comes with Yamaha student trumpets, which is the 11B4. It's rim size is comparable to a 7C if I'm not mistaken, and the shallower cup (shallower compared to the 7C anyway...) should make it easier for him to play.

Re: Best Beginner Trumpet? Getzen would be great. Yamaha should be good. Heck as for mouthpieces Conn-Selmer make a no name 7C for the masses too. But a Bach is not expensive so can be nice to see a NAME BRAND you can recognize.
