Best trumpet to buy?

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I am buying a trumpet for my boyfriend for Christmas and I don't know what to get. He's been playing for years, but gave his coronet to his little brother. When talking he said he didn't want a coronet this time and was looking for some with a 'dirtier sound.' Also, if it's possible, I'm trying to keep it under $300. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks

Re: Best trumpet to buy?

Hello,

To keep this uner $300 you will be in the market for a cheap -made in China- trumpet. I'm not very familiar with them but I hear they are pretty bad in terms of workmanship and quality. I'm sure you can get a trumpet sound out of them (for at least a while) and if he is looking for a dirty sound this might be just the ticket

How serious is your boyfriend about the trumpet? People don't usually recommend trumpets from China here (from what I can tell) but if its just to mess around on once in a while maybe it will work.

Re: Best trumpet to buy?

The only way to buy a trumpet is to play it first, PERIOD.
You may think it would be cool to surprise him, but you are not doing anybody any favors. For $300, the only decent thing would be a used intermediate trumpet like from Yamaha, Getzen or B&S. Sometimes you can get a deal on an instrument that came off rental. Take somebody that can play well! there is NO OTHER WAY!

Re: Best trumpet to buy?

Hi, Im selling a great Holton Galaxy from 66 thats gets a great sound and has a pro case for 250 shipped priority mail. I can send pics to your email if you want. It comes in a pro case with dust blanket and is a sought after horn. It was an intermediate-pro level horn and is great for jazz and be bop etc. Rick my email is SRV1@knology.net

Re: Best trumpet to buy?

Hello Kag, in this forum people spend more money in trumpets, so may be is difficult people tell you something interesting about what you want to buy.
If your boyfriend is playing seriously and for years, may be he will like a good horn, you could find something second hand. Problem is, you need a good trumpet player to test it before you buy it. A good looking horn could be bad, and a bad looking horn really good for the price.
A friend buyed this: THOMANN TR 400 G BB-TROMPETE - U.K. International Cyberstore

and i think it was very good FOR THE MONEY ( 150 euros!!!!!! ).
An instrument is something very important and personal if he studies seriously, if not may be you will have no problem buying any horn, but this is a very risky thing.

Re: Best trumpet to buy?

Thanks for all your help. I decided to wait it and let him pick one out himself. I want to make sure it's the right one. Thanks again

Re: Best trumpet to buy?

Hi all. I just wanted to close the thread. He ended up choosing a Bach TR500 with a Megatone mouthpiece (3C). He said it's a great horn to get back into playing. The horn was $499 from Sam Ash.

Thanks for all your advice.

Interesting...that Thomann trumpet looks exactly like my Andreas Eastman 420G...a GREAT horn! I love mine altough I have a few other much more costly horns....I always seem to go back to my Eastman.
