buying first cornet

after doing some research i've found a number of recommendations for good sub $1,000 cornets for beginners:

olds ambassador
bach cr300
king super 20
getzen eterna 782
yamaha ycr 2330

would anyone like to comment on these or suggest other good possibilities? the two that i've read the most positive comments on are the olds ambassador and the getzens, but can anyone tell me more about which models and years i should be looking for? would it be worth it to spend the money on a new getzen eterna 782?

thanks.

Consider the Olds super cornet ,the studio model, the special, some of these are big bore and they are all well made, good long lasting valves, and are players.! Good luck

Re: buying first cornet

Yamaha 2330 is my pick from that list. Ambassadors are good $100 horns, but you can get a much better instrument for a few hundred more. If you want to spend closer to $800, an older Bach Strad 181 cornet is a great instrument.

Re: buying first cornet

I had a Yamaha YCR 2330, it was O.K. . I much prefer the Bach CR 310 I now own. I also own an Olds Ambassador trumpet and I also preferred it over a Yamaha YTR 2330 I used to own as well.

I'm not knocking Yamaha, but the 23 series do little to impress me. I have owned many Yamaha saxes over the years, and the YTS 62 I now own was my main sax for a longer period than any other sax I've ever owned. I'm just not a huge fan of entry level Yamaha's. I believe they are solid, well made horns, but they just don't deliver the feel that I find with their better horns.

I believe you'll get more from the other horns you mentioned. I used to own an Olds Studio Cornet. It was on par with the CR 310. The advantage of buying the Olds over the Bach would be resell. I sold my Studio model for almost twice as much as what I paid for the Bach. If you want to keep your cost down, a Bach CR 300 or CR 310 would be the easiest to find at a lower price.

And Dale is right, his Bach Strad 181 is a beauty. Check out some of his previous posts, he shows some pics of his Strad. It's a great looking horn ! Although I have never played a Bach Strad Cornet, I have always liked the way the Strad trumpets play and feel. It would be one of my top choices for a step up from the CR 310 or the Olds Studio.

Re: buying first cornet

Gday
Olds also made a pro model Ambassador, Called the A6S.
It is a "shepherds crook" wrap, with triggers on the first and third slides. They dont come up for sale very often, but are well worth seeking out. Those lucky enough to one one swear by them.
Cheers
Laurie
