Buying a new trumpet

Okay, I am a freshman in college and really need to buy a new trumpet. I would like to get a professional of some sort and I was looking for recommendations. I don't really have a lot of money but i could probably spend around 1500. Any recommendations would be grateful.

Re: Buying a new trumpet

With $l,500 I would be looking for something used. Be careful and play as many as possible before you buy, as there are many irreputable folks out there trying to sell junk.
If you are close to a reputable store, I would be visiting them and telling them what type of thing I am looking for. If you are a trumpet major, I would talk with my teacher openly and tell him what I am willing to spend and ask for his advice.

Even if you aren't majoring, ask a trumpeters in the department, a lot of them will have an opinion (take 'em with a grain of salt). But yeah, go used and try a bunch
(AKA what he said but ask everyone who you could trust)

Re: Buying a new trumpet

ask around, but i tried a NYTC "phaeton" trumpet a couple weeks ago, and thought it was brilliant. Just about everyone where i was playing it thought it was outstanding aswell.

There are any number of decent brands, and you can certainly pick up an excellent used horn in your price range. Heed the comments encouraging you to try as many different types as possible. Also consider the bore of the horns you try. Different horns "speak" differently to different players, even within the same brand. You need one that will speak with your trumpet voice... even if everyone else is buying something completely different.

As a Benge guy this is where I make a pitch for you to at least try a pre-UMI LA Benge if you can (You can read about Benge at: Benge). They are greatly undervalued, and you could pick up an excellent example for well within your budget

Re: Buying a new trumpet

It depends on what your wanting it For an all around type horn you could try a Lawler C7. There are a couple on TH right now. Also a Bach Strad would be a good choice but go for an older one made in the 70's or so.

Re: Buying a new trumpet

Lland,
I would strongly suggest that you have a chat with Felix from NYTC. Sometimes he sells almost new horns for 1500-2000$ - the horns that he uses for exhibitions are in excellent condition and reduced price.
