![]() | buying a step up trumpet i'm a sophmore in high school and i currently play a bach student trumpet. i want to buy a new trumpet. it would be something that i use in wind ensemble for the next 3 years and maybe march my last year. i've been saving money for a while now and i have $550. i've been saving to get this trumpet: Buy Stomvi Elite 330-L Bb Light Trumpet online at Musician's Friend but that website is having an end of summer sale, and their selling this trumpet for less: Buy Giardinelli GTR 512 Professional Trumpet online at Musician's Friend if i get this one, i'll either get the black for $475 or the silver for $529 what i wanna ask is, do you think it would be better to wait and buy the stomvi one, which is what i really want, or should i buy the one that is on sale now? do any of you guys have experience with either of these trumpets, if so can you guys tell me which one is better or worse? ![]() | Re: buying a step up trumpet GW, I can understand your excitement and desire for a new/better horn. I'm saving for one myself at the moment. A couple of thoughts however, first, i seriously doubt that the Giardinelli can compete with the Stomvi. I'm sure there's a big difference.....second, you're talking about wind ensemble....that Stomvi is a jazz ax. The Stomvi Elite 330 Bb (without the L) is the horn you need for classical. Also, have you played any Stomvis? Why do you want one? If you have that's great. I would advise waiting one more year before you upgrade. Spend 10th. grade practicing hard and once a month go around to your local music stores and try lots of horns to see what you really like. you may find out that there are other horns that you like better than Stomvis and are 400-500 bucks cheaper, like a Getzen 3051 Custom or a Yamaha Xeno. good luck.

![]() | Re: buying a step up trumpet i wanted the stomvi because it looks like a bach strad, but is cheaper and has waterkeys. talk about a bad reason for wanting something. the reason i want a new trumpet now is because there is an 80% chance i won't be continuing music after high school, and if i'm going to buy something, i want to be able to use it for at least 3 years, otherwise, there was no point in buying it. i can't really go around trying trumpets because there is really only one music shop around my area that sells instruments, and i've already tried the one they sell. i've gone all the way done to miami once before to try stuff out, but it is such a long drive that my dad says he will only take me there once more, and when we are there i HAVE to buy something. |

I understand the distance thing and I sympathize. Okay then, a couple more thoughts; first DON'T STOP AFTER HIGH SCHOOL. Just because you might not be a music major in college doesn't mean you can't play in the wind ensemble. Music is for life!! Hang in there. Second, if you can't go around and play test then do LOTS of research on line and ask lots of questions on these kinds of forums to make sure you at least get a good horn that will get you in the ball park for the sound and style of music you want to do. That way you don't accidentally buy a jazz horn for classical or vice versa. And yes, those were bad reasons to get the stomvi.

![]() | Re: buying a step up trumpet PS. i forgot to say that with 600.00 bucks and some GOOD research you can probably get something pretty darn good on eBay.

Wow, I was looking around and it is a bit confusing. There are a lot of options on their horns. Anyway, yes, that one (above) is the one. Just look at the "bell weight", it should be "Standard". Light will be for jazz. Standard will be good for classical or jazz.

![]() | Re: buying a step up trumpet If you are at that point I would definitely either save for the one you lust for or find a great deal on a lightly used pro horn for now. I found my Benge for like $500 and while it is frowned upon as a UMI horn it is not different for me than a Bach or several others I tried and was happy with the lot of them. So, find the one you want TRY IT HONESTLY and see if it is really the horn you think it is. If it IS then save and buy that. If not find a good pro horn and be happy. |
