Calicchio question...

I just got hold of a used Calicchio with the following makings. R3 on the bell....7 on the leadpipe, and a backward facing middle valve slide. Serial # 66xx. Is this a standard model? It seems to have the extra large reciever. The horn plays very nicely!
Thanks,
D.B.

Re: Calicchio question...

Hey there, I have an R3/7 and it's the perfect counterpart to the other Calicchio I use for lead work (1S/2). I'm very familiar with Calicchios and have had a bunch of them throughout my career. These two are the best by far. The #3 bell has a lot of potential for sound and I actually like the more restrictive #7 pipe for legit and show work. Is yours raw brass?

Re: Calicchio question...

Mine is silver plate. Does yours have the forward facing middle valve slide? Mine does. Was this standard? I'll need to get some new corks on my mutes so that they fit in the large bell.

Re: Calicchio question...

Every Calicchio I have owned has had the forward-facing 2nd valve slide so as far as I know, this was standard on the LA horns. I don't know what the standard is on the Tulsa horns now but some of the pics on the website show a "normal" set-up. I used to have one of the copper 3/9's and remember having to buy another trio of mutes to fit the #3 bell. My wife is big into crafts so she steered me in the right direction regarding cork and contact cement.

Re: Calicchio question...

You'll find a description of your horn at the Calicchio web site. click on Instruments and Red Brass. I just picked up a used R3/2. Standard weight #2 lead pipe, I'm just starting to home in on the center. Rex, do you find any particular type (backbore, cup, brand, etc.) of mouthpiece works better with the Calicchio?

I think the Tulsa shop will point the 2nd slide either direction, depending on what you want. This may have been true in the old days too. I note that the horn that Dom is holding in the photo on the Calicchio website has the backward direction slide.

I've got a Hollywood 1s/2 that points forward.

Re: Calicchio question...

Hey Ed,
I use Monettes on it, specifically a B1-5M for legit work and B1-5 for show or combo. Just for comparison, I tried a regular Bach 1C on it and it was OK. I think the extra weight of the Monette sits better with the weight of the horn and, oddly enough, this combination is capable of more delicate playing than the Stomvi I was using. When I first got it, I tried using it in some lead applications with a Warburton 3S/5 and it played well but the 1S/2 is the overwhelming choice for this type of playing for me. By the way Ed, you know me as Mic Smith...right around the corner. Rex Brighton is my "porn name"...long story.
