I love mine! Light as tinfoil and too bright for everyday use, but you won't see me parting with it anytime soon :)

Calicchio is now owned by a corporation, before it was ran by Chris Calicchio in Hollywood, CA before Chris it was his grandpa Dominic who made the horns famous. Arturo S. Freddie H. are just some of the guys that played D Calicchio trumpets.

Re: Calicchio Trumpets D or C version

Sorry Stevie,

I didn't realise that you were throwing in your choices. I also didn't realise that the new Tulsa trumpets were made by a corporation and not sure whether that, on its own, is a good thing or bad thing.

Regards,

Trevor

Re: Calicchio Trumpets D or C version

Calicchio is owned and operated by John Duda, and he builds them like Domenic did, all by hand. I've owned three Calicchios; a Domenic, a Chris, and a Tulsa that John built custom for me. The Domenic was a lightweight large bore with a 1 bell and a 7 leadpipe. The Chris horn was an ML bore with a 1s bell and a 2 leadpipe. The Tulsa is a medium bore with a lighweight red brass 1s bell and a 10 leadpipe. The Chris horn had problems and I quickly sold it. I've owned about thirty horns, and the Domenic was the best I ever had until John built my Tulsa. It's the lightest, brightest, easiest speaking horn I've ever played, and it has the quickest, smoothest valves I've played. It has triggers on first and third, no tube rings, and John built me two tuning slides. One has a brace and is .453 bore, and the other has no brace and is .450 bore. The slide without a brace opens up the upper end, and feels more open even though it is choked. I'm obvously a John Duda fan, and will never part with the Tulsa.

Best regards, John Creed

Re: Calicchio Trumpets D or C version

Do a search for older posts by Larry Gianni (dating form around 2004). You'll get the complete Calicchio saga and a lot of entertaining anecdotes. A few years ago there was a very active Calicchio community here on the TM. Be prepared to spend a few days in front of your computer

Have fun,
Marc
