Anyone ever play one? I read that it was the precursor to the Jazz model

I have played some NY Callets. There were several different models that Jerry made, and they predated the "Soloist" which turned into the current "Jazz" model. 99% of the Callets out there are great horns, they blow excellently, have a great sound and great intonation.
