Question Chemical Cleaning

Hello fellow TMers,

Everyone has heard of having horns "chemically cleaned", does anyone know what chemical is used and how it is applied?

Just wondering.

Re: Chemical Cleaning

Chemicals used in shops are either a type of industrial soap for horns that aren't full of calcification, and they used to use muriatic (sp) acid, but now they use something else. At the school I go to it is called Etch-Klenz.
Better equipped shops will use an ultrasonic. They are great, it takes only 2 minutes or so to do an entire horn.

Re: Chemical Cleaning

I have heard that sodium cyanide was used as a cleaner.

Re: Chemical Cleaning

If I remember correctly, muriatic acid isn't used any more because it contained cyanide.

Re: Chemical Cleaning

The store I used to work at used muriatic acid. That was about three years ago, they could have changed by now.

Thanks Brekellefuw.

So they just dump it down the bell and let it run through?

We have large tubs of it. we disassemble the trumpet and then submerge it and scrub the inside with brushes.
