Choosing a better trumpet

Help, fellow forumlings

I'd like to buy myself a trumpet to replace my student horn (I play a cornet). I will use the trumpet for jazz, not school or any kind of orchestral playing.

Since money is tight, I am considering a vintage trumpet ('54 Olds Studio). I can afford it, but I think it will need some fixing. Its mouthpiece receiver is slightly cracked. Should I give up this trumpet?

Also, I was thinking about getting a C trumpet (with a Bb set of pipes ) and have both in one. Schilke, probably. Are C trumpets ok? Are they ok when one makes them Bb?

Thanks for your help...

If you get a C/Bb trumpet, it won't play anywhere near as good in Bb as it does in C
In addition, if you plan on only playing jazz and not classical/orchestra, a C trumpet will not be particularly useful. There are a lot of horns that can be had for fairly cheap. Check out the classified on this forum and trumpetherald and you can probably find one you'll like the looks of.
Since at the moment you seem to have an idea of what you want out of a horn, I'd recommend one of the more "middle of the road" horns

The Studio is a great looking and great playing horn. I recommend that you call a repair guy BEFORE buying it just to get an estimate on how much it would take to repair the receiver, and add that to the cost of the horn to see if you can really afford it. I don't think it will be that much.

Re: Choosing a better trumpet

Thank you for your answers :)

Unofrtunately, I am quite limited in my choice, since I live in the middle of nowhere. So, US classifieds are of no help: I'd pay more for shipping+tax&duty than for the trumpet...

And I'm afraid that taking this trumpet to the repairman before buying it is impossible - I have to go to Italy to get it. It's always something

I'm not really a fan of Yamaha, but it seems to be my only choice...

Thanx for the advice on C/Bb trumpets, I appreciate it

Well, given your geographical isolation, it seems that you are going to take what is available. There is an old saying that used to be repeated in isolated groups..."If you can't have the horn you love, then love the horn you have."

In your case, that is going to need to become the guiding philosophy. After all, we can make a thousand recommendations but if they are not available to you then they won't help a bit.

It sounds like you can only take the best deal in front of you and hope for workable result.

Good luck.

Go on-line to the various ebay stores, I just saw a like-new Olds Studio for less than $500......or, go for a used Jaeger Hunter-Diamond trumpet....the best trumpet I have ever played (and at an amazingly low price...)
